Its the Rockets fault. Every uniform design is full reinventing each uni, complete departures from the previous uni. Never any amending and tweaking to anything existing. The retros, the championship years, the pajamas, the current unis, each one of them is absolutely completely distinct from one another. The only unis that closely resembled the previous one were the 1st couple uniforms ever - the green San Diego Rockets uni to the "retro" Houston red uni that followed. Basically all they did was change the color (and logo) And thats all you got to do with the abundance of yellow! Rockets insist on throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Just adjust colors, make shorts longer, slant/curve/straighten fonts and you're set! Ironically this alternate's the only time in recent history they've amended to an existing style, staying the course instead of veering off into some splashy gimmick. So I respect that about the alternate.
I have a degree in graphic design, not that it counts for much in this topic. But I prefer the red and white CURRENT uniforms. The sense of movement, the modern panels, the way the R really looks like a rocket. Rocket red says it all. White is the neutral balance...and gold is not really all that necessary. I love the thrusting look of the current unis. From a pure graphic design standpoint, when we remove sentimentality and visceral color combination...the Rockets' 2004-current uniforms are outstanding actually. Maybe the quasi-Asian font could be tweaked but... Change can be a good thing so again, I don't find anything really wrong with the Rox current threads. A guess a minority of us have a modern sense of fashion here. The newer alternate is not too bad. As stated, it unites the "ketchup and mustard" of the championship years with the modern era. Those pictures of the popular red and gold as pictured on Yao and T-Mac in the OP...the font seems way too collegiate for me. I do not like serifs on the word "HOUSTON" but then that's just me. I don't like the old style trim. And from a distance...the look is very, very similar to the Lakers' Showtime unis though in red. So no, I don't like the very, very archaic throwbacks.
you are absolutely correct! i was thinking the same thing. This is how detroit did their jerseys when they went back to their old colors. i wish the Rockets would let the fans vote rather than one artist make the call. These jerseys would sell like crazy! This would definitely be one of the best looking jerseys in the NBA for a long long time.
Where's the I freakin love them to death option? Those uni's are some of the best by far. If you see fans at other stadiums during road games a lot are wearing those and the same style red, blue, and white Yao jersey's. I wish those were the alternates with the red, gold, white being our regs. DAMN IT LES!
