Whatever genre you listen to, whatever you're doing while you're listening, what do you think about? When I listen to music I think about how things used to be. The simpler life, the simple joys of life that we've all forgotten about. Discuss...

    i almost always think about:

    1) who wrote it and how they came up with it
    2) why they chose to put it in that order
    3) what line of thinking it would take for ME to arrive at that final product

I don't think about anything much really. If there's a nice slow song on I think "damn, that's a nice slow song". If it's uptempo music I think, "Woo. Sounds good."

    I'm simple that way.

"Why didn't I think of that first? I could be rich."

    this..^^^

I always break a song down to individual insturments/sounds. count bpm, chord structure, riffs, drum patterns etc....then wonder how I can transfer that sequence to my DAW, I usually do this the first few times I here a song.

deftones and The Mars Volta.......I never make any attempt to decipher their music, I really get lost in their melodies and lyrics.

Depends on what I'm listening to; some songs remind me of old friends, lovers, good times, places I've been, some stuff just helps me clear my head.

Zappa usually cheers me up. Same with the Beatles.

It really depends on what I am doing while listening to it and what kind of music it is. For something like the Borads of Canada I often will feel a longing for a simpler time in life as a child or whatever. And if the music is very lyrical I will focus on the words and what picture they are painting in my mind. Sometimes I will try and put myself in the place of the artists and imagine what it would have been like to make that track at that time in their life, and what they were going through in life to have made them make the song convey those emoitons.

Same here. The focus keeps changing, but now I'm particularly listening to the mixing aspects of a track. I have a hard time filling up the spectrum w/out getting too muddy and sounds clashing too much.

Also how people keep the energy of a track going w/out sounding repetitive, the small details and effects in the background, how a particular song arranges elements in stereo, etc.

Wouldn't the lotion on your hand make the volume knob greasy?

hmm....depends on what I'm listening to.

Songs take me back to places I used to be.

Classic Rock songs typically bring back memories / flashbacks of Saudi Arabia.

Linkin Park / Eminem / Trance brings back My years in Switzerland.

So we will get your answer from Mazyar.

I listen to the lyrics of the song and try to understand what the song is about. If I'm lazing, its all about the beat baby. I just wanna dance....I wanna dance!
