If it interesting to me that Yao himself never feel any racism towards him, he took Shaq's mocking his Chinese accent as a bad joke instead of racism. People in China never think Sir Charles' comments as racism but as pure stupidity. I simply don't understand why some people here are so angry and can't wait to turn everything into a racial war.
As a Chinese immigrant myself, I think US is probably the best country that can provide everyone an equal opportunity to success. Yao was successful in China, and he is also very successful in this country. There are a hundred times more Yao Hater in China than that in US. If you guys can read Chinese and willing to browise sina.com, you will find so many Yao haters using all kinds of nasty words to curse Yao like you won't believe it. Trust me, Sir Charles can be considered as role model type of Mr. Nice guy compared with these Chinese haters.
Are there any Yao Haters in this country? Hell, there are a lot!! Are these haters are racists? I don't think so!

Actually black people get away with alot. I would say that there's a greater percentage of racist blacks than racist whites in this country.

Actually you got it backwards. Calling Yao Ming, Ming would be equivalent to calling Jeff Van Gundy, Jeff. Yao is his family name. In the chinese system the family name comes first, rather than last. Ming would be equivalent to the first name. Why do you think it says Yao on the back of his jersey?

Yao's a better player than 98% of the league, but he gets dogged more than anyone. if you think his race doesn't have a tiny bit to do with that, maybe you should crawl out of that rock every once in a while.

Well, it seems to me people throw around the word "racist" the same way they throw around "hating" and "love," when "love" can just mean something like "applause" as in "Show them some love." All of these words are diluted by overuse. A lot of times people don't even know what race is. Chinese, for instance, is not a race; neither is Jewish or Mexican.

Hmm . . . What if Yao were African-American and had the same type of personality and game as he does now? I don't know that he would be any more popular. He sure wouldn't be as popular worldwide.

I understand what you are saying completely. But you can't simply reverse the name order and thereby solve the naming question. Although the family name is Yao and the given name is Ming, I guarantee you nobody in Yao's life calls him "Ming," not his parents, his girlfriend, his friends, Colin Pine, because that's just not the custom with two-word names like that. Go on a Chinese website and find a Chinese person calling him "Ming" for me. Don't worry. I can read it. I won't search myself because it's not going to be found.

As for Yao being on the back of his jersey, that's exactly what I want to point out to everyone who keeps calling him Ming.

Now come on: you've called my credibility into question. Use your Chinese skills and find me one example of Yao Ming being called Ming in Chinese.

Last time I checked, this isnt chinese. I am relating the chinese system of naming convention to the english system. Your analogy of calling JVG Gundy was flawed because it isnt Gundy. I am not arguing what he should or shouldnt be called, Im just pointing out the flaw in what you are saying. Anyways most basketball players are refered to by their last name.

Btw, I'm not disagreeing with you about what he should or shouldnt be called. Whether you call it Nowitzki or Dirk, people will still know who you are talking about.

Right, it's not about race, but it's about discrimination - Yao is different, from his look, his size, his background to the way he playes bball.

You are still wrong. "Ming" is incorrect. "Jeff" is not incorrect. "Van Gundy" is not incorrect either. "Gundy" is incorrect and "Ming" is incorrect.

Take a look at a Chinese article such as this one on the Cavs game

    http://sports.sina.com.cn/k/2006-12-03/11552604803.shtml

and you will notice that all the American players are called by their last names only, such as "McGrady," "Alston," etc., and Yao Ming is consistently called "Yao Ming." He is never called "Ming," or "Yao" either for that matter. According to Chinese, he should be called "Yao Ming."

You will notice that in English Yao Ming calls himself "Yao."

So, Yao does not call himself "Ming" and Chinese do not call him "Ming," the same way that JVG does not call himself "Gundy" and Americans do not call him "Gundy." Calling JVG "Jeff" is appropriate; calling Yao Ming "Ming" is not appropriate.

And look what you get away with!

Man, talk about all of you calling the kettle black.

Yao gets a bad rap becuase of the hype he came in with. If LJ didn't live up to the hype he's be judged harshly too.

Yao was a number one pick - not a 10th or 11th pick. He will always be judged on a standard higher then other players....and Yao isn't the only one who gets scrutinied.

Jordon, Kobe, SHaq, Dirk, Iverson, and a long list of others have been ripped apart. Stop thinking Yao's critics are just picking on him.

Yao came in as the next best thing to cheap electronics. WHen a guy gets tauted as the next big thing then people are going to jump on him when he doesn't deliver. That's not racism - that's the way it works.

Although Race might be an underlying issue here, I think Yao just needs to let his game talk for him. If he wins championships he will be just as highly regarded as people of other race/background etc. I am pretty sure 99% of the media is free of this so called racial bias but we tend to hear more from the stupid loud mouths (Barkley, Michael Irvin ). I just ignore what people like them say and watch basketball. Who cares what some stupid morons on ESPN or TNT think as long as YAO brings the championship to the rockets I am happy.

I knew you couldn't resist talking garbage.

I'd say Yao, as a tall center, came in as the next best thing to "call centers."

I don't really think its about race, its about our "show me now" culture. Sure Yao has been putting up big numbers, but he hasn't done it consistently on national TV with the whole country watching.

Its just like football. Think of how many great quarterbacks put up big numbers during the season, but the only games people tend to remember are the monday night ones and the playoffs.

Until Yao does it when everyone is watching and expecting him to do it, leaving no doubt that he is awesome, then all the naysayers will shutup.
