Its extremely difficult to draft a player. You can evaluate a player's skillset, but its impossible to see a player's heart and determination level. Michael Redd went 43rd overall in 2000. Arenas 31st in 2001. Ginobilli went in the 2nd round, Tony Parker last pick of the first round. Man I hate the Spurs.

All I can say is I should be a scout cuz I can pick those late first or second round draft picks as well as the pros do it.

I remember wanting to draft.................Carlos Boozer.
I remember thinking SA was stupid to trade away Barbosa. (based on watching video)
I remember thinking Tony Parker was gonna be a very good player. (based on watching video.)
I remember wanting the Rox to draft Paul Millsap after looking up his stats then watching video on him and we took Eliyahu.
I remember hating Chris Taft, felt he would bust.
I loved David Lee and Ronny Turiaf before they were drafted.
    Wanted to draft Steve Blake.
Knew David West would be a good player when I saw him as a rookie.
Thought Matt Barnes was an NBA player when I saw him at UCLA.
Wanted the Rox to draft R.Jefferson and was ecstatic when we got him, then puzzled when we traded him for Eddie Griffin, whom I had not seen play except for a couple jump shots. (I accepted that the Rox had studied the kid and fully expected him to be a superstar since we traded away Jefferson to get him.)
Did not understand why we would draft Pryczbilla and trade him for Collier, always thought Pryczbilla was the better player.
Wanted to draft James Posey, then later was happy we traded for him, was hoping we could re-sign him.
Preferred Ty Lue to Bryce Drew and Rashard to Turcan (who didn't?)
Hoped we would go after Stephen Jackson when San Antonio let him go.
Could not understand why Dallas drafted Cherokee Parks at 12 when there were so many players better than him. (nothing worse than a guy drafted for size that has NO SKILLS whatsoever.)

    just to name a few

    Right now..........I'm thinking

Brandon Rush is gonna make some noise and be a very good NBA player. (he's got skills, athleticism, and the pedigree)
Unless Oden develops an offensive game, his value is way overstated.
J.J. Redick is gonna hit a lot of 3 point shots in the NBA and will have a much better career than Luther Head.
Aaron Brooks is gonna be a terrific point guard in a couple years and give opponents fits trying to slow him down.
Gerald Green is not gonna make it, even in his hometown.
Al Horton is gonna turn out to be a very, very good NBA player and may be the class of the 2007 draft.
Conservatively, Morris Almond will be a top 10 scorer in the NBA at some point in his career. (Been watching him too long. He's gonna make it. Just hope it's after Utah gives up on him.)
Dallas was stupid to trade away Devin Harris. (They're not gonna win it.)
Brad Newley was a wasted draft pick. (He's never gonna make it.)
On the other hand, I expect Joel Freeland to eventually play and be a rotation player for somebody in the NBA.
Travis Diener will hang out in the NBA for over 10 years and wind up playing for a pile of teams as his shooting will keep him receiving a check, similar to Ty Lue and his quickness/shooting.

I've always believed that the draft is 20% work, 80% luck. Every team could look smart if you compile a list of good picks. And every team could look stupid if you compile a list of bad picks. It is what it is. You hit some. You miss some.

What the Spurs did better than everybody else is that they were one the first to figure out picking high potential foreign players with low 2nd round picks and watch them develop into something good. If they didn't pan out, those were just useless picks anyways.

Now they don't have that advantage anymore because everybody else is scouting foreign players. Scola is the last of the breed. And it is so satisfying that we stole him from the Spurs.

Al Hortford or Al Thorthon? Or are you saying they both are gonna be good, fuse together, and become Al Horton..

I thought the same thing of Oden.
I don't think Redick will be off the injury list long enough to be a better player.
Morris Almond top ten? That caught me by surprise, but I'll take your word for it.

And yes, quit your job and scout for the Rockets.

It takes two to argue, and I am not going to do it.

I try to praise Morey, people take it as bashing the old administration. People see what they want to see. It's dumb to get sucked into an argument about peoples *opinions* anyway.

hold on...my first comment was a "fixed it for you" about bashing the Spurs. I hate the Spurs and their annoying fans...and that goes way before the tanked and jumped over Boston to get Duncan.

I try to bash the Spurs, people take it as bashing their thread. People see what they want to see. It's dumb to get sucked into an argument about peoples *opinions* anyway.

It takes two to argue, and you started it. I merely bashed the Spurs.

    carry on

oh and, you're still ignoring jopatmc, CriscoKidd and Easy.

You know what irritates me...is that you chat admins haven't figured out a way to give my a wildcard ignore. why can't I do this:

    /ignore Guest*

    what? is that so hard.

as for your other question...it's not so much i have settled in as Yao going down...that was so sad...i had to come back in for karma...to chime in with everyone else.

    that's my altruistic reason.

my selfish reason is we are in a playoff race and i'm planning ticket flights and vacation time for the playoffs. I figure Dave2000 and krosfyah might have forgotten (or worse, foresaken me)...so it's like to get tix from them you have to pay your dues by contributing to the GARM the best you can. i don't want them to forget me or anything. make sense.

besides...finalsbound and moestavern have are holding me hostage with an incriminating photo of me...i'm like their puppet...at their service...until I can get the photo back from them. make sense.

there is a lot of good European players before manu, while technically manu is a south american playing in the euro league.

Anyway, talking about draft luck, i still think that bulls at the 1987 draft, got real lucky and drafted both pippen and grant with the 5th and 10th pick. You can say good scouting, but the bulls did draft in a center with the name of Olden Polynice with the 8th pick.

    Sorry, Al Thorton, Clippers.

Morris Almond will become a top ten scorer for at least one season, not saying a career top 10 scorer......yet. I think he will become a great scoring option for some NBA team and will have at least a Michael Redd type career. Actually, I think he will turn out better than Michael Redd as Redd is not very efficient.

Kwame? Olowakandi? Those are just a couple of number ones that didn't pan out, much less top 5.

There was a window of time when the Spurs were ahead of the curve on overseas players. That allowed them to draft guys like Ginobli and Parker lower in the draft. That was very smart on their part, but apart from that, have they really been that much smarter than everyone else?
