Of your list, I think Raging Bull may be the best pound for pound movie (others would say Taxi Driver.) But Midnight Run, as someone mentioned, is quite good.

And the Deer Hunter is incredible. That might be his best acting job.

For me, the Untouchables is fun, but he's not in it that much, and he totally hams it up as a goomba.

EDIT: Oh! Mean Streets! Early Scorcese, with Harvey Keitel. So good!

I sincerely wanted to see it, sir. Thank you... NOT.

Wow, thanks for all of the input. I'm going to have to get Netflix for a month just to see all of these, although I will stick to my word and buy the top ones from the poll. Hopefully leaving it up a couple of days will get at least 75 or so votes.

I guess I'll have to keep an eye out for a sale on the Godfather series and pick that up as well. Of all movies, that's probably the one I'm most ashamed of. I will hang my head in shame now. :(

While not one of his great movies as far as quality of acting, I have always liked Ronin. He had great chemistry with Jean Reno in that movie.

Taxi Driver - My personal favorite
Raging Bull - the best-made film
    Goodfellas - Extreme rewatchability

That's a great start. Godfather Pt. II is also essential, but I don't find it as interesting as the three above. Ronin is also extremely rewatchable and has one of Hollywood's greatest car chases.

"City by the Sea" is one of his best IMO.

I voted Taxi Driver but really any of those choices are good to start with. GoodFellas would be my #2 choice but as someone else said, it is really more of a Ray Liotta (and Joe Pesci) movie than Bobby D.

Midnight Run is the ONE I would pick if it was listed specifically. To me, that was the start of DeNiro as a comedian. He is brilliant in that movie and has great chemistry with Charles Grodin who seems like the most unlikely person to have this chemistry with.

Raging Bull and Goodfellas are excellent, the others are also great.

Taxi Driver is the best film in the history of cinema.

thats my favorite one on the list as well, but if the thread starter hasnt seen any of them id have to recommend goodfellas first.

bronx tale is a great movie, but deniro is in more of a supporting role in that.

Ok, well we have one down. I wanted to get A Bronx Tale, I went to the Movie Exchange on Westheimer and Voss, as well as the Best Buy on Richmond and 610 and was only able to find Goodfellas, so I bought that and watched it tonight. I don't think I've ever seen a movie that used the "f" word so much! I have to agree with what someone else said, it's definitely more of a Ray Liotta movie. I would say Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro played about the same roles, maybe just a little more to DeNiro.

Overall I'd definitely give it a high grade, and it is no doubt a movie that I would/could watch again.

It is looking like my next purchase will be Taxi Drive or Raging Bull, but we'll see where we stand tomorrow!
