We would have won a championship by now with Battier if Yao and T-mac hadn't gotten injured all those years, and we would have been a worse team within that championship window with Gay on the team rather than Battier. So that's why it was the right move at the time.
You can't just plug Gay into this team and say we would be so much better. Who knows what would have happened with draft picks and free agency if we hadn't done the trade. No Brooks, Budinger, Lee, etc.
Who cares. You guys do realize he just got a 5 year, $80 million dollar deal, right? There's no way he's worth that much. He's gonna revert to what he is, a chucker who can't pass or play D, and who scores with crappy efficiency.
Isn't the question suppose to be about Thabo Sefolosha since he is who we were going to take if trade didn't go down? Getting rid of Swift opened the door for Landry and Scola. So, without the trade, Scola probably wouldn't be a Rocket. Got to consider that too.
We cant say we are better or worse without him for sure. Why we dont have him. We can say it was a horrible trade for value and we got a role player and gave away a guy for practically nothing in return.
Yea, we pretty much can. Gay would of been JVGed behind McGrady and wouldnt of developed. Memphis has never been as good with Gay as it was with Shane. Actually we did it to take the defensive load off McGrady who at the time was a terrific defender. We dumped Swift so we could sign Bonzi Wells who was coming off a killer playoff series vs SA. We were targeting Roy who was snatched up by Portland. Battier + Wells was the second choice. Thabo was the third choice. It was pretty much set in stone we were targeting a defender at the wing to pair with McGrady if we couldnt get Roy. We had a terrific run, made some history with 22 game streak, but sadly got terrible playoff matchups which ultimately thwarted us from a title. It was a shame because 2007 was a prime opportunity to win a ring. Utah -> Goldenstate -> San Antonio -> Cleveland. We matched up well against all those teams...except Utah. Why you keep trying to rewrite history is beyond me. I guess you think if you keep saying it, it will somehow become true. To most though, it really just makes you look foolish and its kinda getting annoying.
The funny thing about bringing this up this many years later is that we(Morey) probably wouldn't have given him 16 mil a year and he wouldn't have been a Rocket by now anyways.
I never liked the move and never will. I think it was one of the worst trades in Rockets' history. The majority fell for the "win now" propaganda. History has demonstrated and will continue to demonstrate that this trade was failure. I've said it before and I'll say it again, when arguably the most talented player in the draft lands in your lap, I don't care what your preconceived plans are, you adjust to the situation, draft the guy, and don't look back.
Yes and this is why Memphis is paying Gay 80M in 5 years. Its worth repeating again: Memphis is paying Gay 16M a year. I fail to see why you and some other posters keep on wanting Gay on this team with that price tag. He isn't playing for free on Memphis, they are paying him hand over fist for barely decent production. Why don't you answer this issue first before you keep on complaining about how Battier sucks balls? Also please tell me how Rudy Gay for Battier is worse than the Eddie Griffin trade
bringing up bad memories in the draft for me i remember that night watching the draft happy we got gay that night then mad because we traded that picks just like the one with last year had a good player dillon brooks taken by the rockets then traded for this pick and hope we can get devonte graham or Jarred Vanderbilt or Malik Newman or Sviatoslav Mykha...
I agree. There comes a point where you want to win EVENTUALLY, SOMETHING, ANYTHING!!! If CP can convince LBJ and his god children to come to Houston; Rudy would be great to come off the bench or even start at the PF position for Tucker. Tucker could return to the bench x-factor donit all defensively guy. We could pick up Jeff Green for another length 3/D defender to follow LBJ and guard KD, Bring in D. Jordan for less than Capella (To Phoenix for the max) who will reunite lob city and another hometown guy (Look what it did for Gerald Green), lastly for the vet minimum we could choose from seth curry or any of the sharp shooters as marksmen. We'd loose EGO of course but replace him by commitee. Now positions 1-4 could shoot the 3 and create their own shot. Defense is mere scheming and effort. Also, if Phoenix offers Capela the max, that leaves Tyson Chandler as the odd man out. He might want to reunite with cp3 for cheap to back up DJ. Thoughts.....
