nope that doesn't work too. probably need to just reset Windows completely cause my pc has been pissing me off lately. never care to do it though. :) takes forever but it ain't a big deal. just weird that it goes off mostly when I'm on my console. might have to buy a whole new modem after all. F$%k you comast.

what can I do with that, but a new cable splitter? that's definitely the cheapest route. don't wanna to buy a new modem. i'll check that out and see if that's the problem.

Don't buy one from walmart, cable frequencies are quite high, you need a really good splitter. You could buy a modem, and if it doesn't work, just return it. Go to Fry's.

but yes, the other poster is right, it might be timing out. Can you get www.speedtest.net to work? Try to see if that'll make your connection go haywire, if it does its due to either wiring, splitters, or the modem as it will pull in maximum bandwidth for about 35 seconds

I have Comcast and my internet will go down for about 10 minutes around 6 or 7 times a day. I've tried to get it fixed but they have no idea what's going on and I've given up. Gooooo Comcast!

hmm, the ping is not too bad. I would try plugging the modem to a different outlet as I suggested earlier, it'll suck if you have clutter but it MIGHT make a difference.

I don't think you specified exactly how often this is happening....maybe I missed it.

It could be a whole range of things, from a splitter, to your modem/router on out to the main connection at the road.

I've had Charter cable internet in two different states and splitters always fouled up my connection in both places. Since I rarely watched TV, I removed the splitter and only added it back when I wanted to watch TV.

First thing I would do is run a cable directly from the box outside to the modem/router if its not ran that way already.

Replace the splitter with a wide band splitter ... something like 5 - 2150mhz

After that, harass their tech support till they get it fixed.

Make note of when it goes out.

some info you could give us that could help determine the problem....

    router specs
    windows version
how often the timeouts occur (irregularly, regularly)
ping yourself for awhile and see if there are any latency spikes (in the command prompt type "ping ip address -t" and run it until you see a pattern).

If it's a regular denial of service/latency spike, it could be WZC/Wlan Autoconfig depending on your windows version and router specs.

I think the problem might be the cheap 1 dollar cable splitter I am using.

It's the only 4 way cable splitter I have laying around the house right now so that's why I'm using it. I have a better one, 5-1002MHz, sitting on the side but it's only a 2 way cable splitter. Don't remember if I was having the same problems with the 2 way splitter when I was using it before(think I might have though). Probably just gonna switch them out again and see if I get the same problem. If it doesn't cut off or times out on me then I'll go buy a new 4-way splitter later.

Hopefully that's the thing that's causing it... :/

*Another note. It almost aways happens in the morning too. hmm

    re Uverse

i've had problem with Uverse tv from time to time. we had an outage in our area the night of the Texans/Eagles game that sent me and my 10 year old scrambling to a sports bar late in the first quarter.

but i've never had a problem with internet service at all. and i've had it for about 3 years now.

As a few have mentioned, do you have a router?

I don't have comcast, but sometimes intermittent connection issues can be the result of a router not set to "always on" for the connection options. Otherwise, some routers constantly connect and reconnect every few mins when you go "idle" for your surfing.

Can you get to the router login via your browser?

Yeah on the other page I said that I do use a router. But I'm pretty sure it aint causing my internet to cut off. On the first page I said that when I lose connection I notice that the 4 lights on my modem go to 1 flashing light. It's like it resets itself; has a mind of it's own.

I think there is room enough in Houston for a small company that specializes in optimizing household internet connections.
