What can the Rockets learn from International ball?

Discussion in 'Houston Rockets: Game Action & Roster Moves' started by pcheung, Aug 15, 2004.

?

Given what's happening to Team USA, what (if anything) should the Rox change?

  1. Outside shooting: McGrady, Lue, Ward and Sura >> Mobley and Francis. Good enough.

  2. Outside shooting: Additions are solid, but we'll need better.

  3. Defense: Trapping man, JVG's purpose in life. Don't mess with a good thing.

  4. Defense: More zone. Forcing players to think dulls their game and aggression, even a Tim Duncan.

  5. Everything: Sign the entire Italian team. Trade Tmac for Arroyo. Let's get it on.

  6. Can't learn anything from Olympic ball, Duncan and AI might as well be playing soccer.

It's not really an international vs NBA rules thing for me though. It's a consistency thing - something that isn't being called at one end of the court is being called at the other end of the court - to the detriment of the United States, that's what's bothering me.

Not like it matters, our individuals are poorly assembled, and poorly coached so even if the reffing was fair, we're still getting smashed by teams we "out-name"; and outplayed by even the teams we beat.

I think International ball is a different game than NBA. 3pter line is 3 foot shorter. No restricted area inside paint. 5 sec violation instead of 3. Plays 40 min instead of 48. The paint area is damn crowed, spacing is awful.

I love how some of the Int'l teams run the pick n roll beautifully, and I love how much ball movement there is in the game. That's something that every NBA team should and could implement... It's the whole point of allowing zones, so that teams don't become stagnant and boring like Rudy T's Rockets..

Exactly! If we send any NBA team, we'd win the title much easily than sending an all-star team. I bet any of the Final Four team would have won the Olympic title. It's much more of a team game in the internation competition than in NBA.

Well, if USA basketball was looking at potential endorsement revenue from showcasing Carmelo, LeBron & Co., then they have to be some of the biggest jackasses ever created. Let's see how many sponsers will line up after Team USA gets sent home because they forget that in the end, it's about the basketball.

I might be open to the NBA adopting some of the international rules; anything that might change the ugly games we are watching now. Maybe go back to the shortly three point line. If 70% of the NBA players think they should be shooting 3s, then maybe we should move the line back in so that we can watch them actually hit some. And maybe a wider lane keeps Shaq out of the lane, and opens it up for cutting and passing.

I think FIBA rules are very lax on requiring players from foreign teams to have enough tatoos.

quote from Santiago of Puerto Rico:

"We knew they didn't have any good shooters," Puerto Rico forward Daniel Santiago said. "Rolando Hourruitiner fronted Tim. . . . I or Jose Ortiz got in back of him, and we just packed it in . . . I mean, really packed it in and dared them to shoot. Sometimes I was out on Richard Jefferson, and I was letting him shoot it . . . They've got penetrators and slashers, so you lay off and let them take those shots."

It sounds familiar. Rockets have addressed this issue by getting better overall jumpshooting on the floor at one time. Having one serious weak link compromises the entire offense, since the defender assigned to that weak link can roam and cause havoc aka doubling Yao and poking at the ball.

what about use of time outs, watching these games may help JVG to ensure he has some left in the 4th quarter
