Houston is a great place to live. Places to visit will run the norm with NASA and a few other places. Nothing that makes you go wow. But then again I'm not wowed by the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State building either (though the Chrysler building does wow me). I had a co-worker visit from the UK last week and I took him bar hopping around Rice Village and then midtown. Good food and good drinks. I think the summarizes Houston pretty well.
Ok, ok, to satisfy Jeff! Outdoors. Brazos Bend State Park is a pretty good suggesstion if you like the outdoors. For that matter, there are a fair number of neat state parks within the vicinity 1-1.5 hours (Lake Houston, Sheldon Lake, Lake Livingston, Huntsville), if that's your thing. The arboretum by Memorial Park is nice, too, and closer. For that matter, Memorial Park itself is a nice walk. And I haven't been yet, but the Anahuac Refuge is suppossed to be really cool. Fishing. I can't say specifically how it is in Galveston, but if you like fishing, and aren't by yourself, find a guide going out of Matagorda or somewhere along there and that can be a great half-day to day activity. Golf. Houston has a lot of golf course, and a lot of them are good golf courses. Food & drink has been mentioned. Shopping. Only go to the Galleria if you like shopping - it has nothing special over any other big sized mall in America. Personally, I would avoid it like the plague. There is other good shopping in Rice Village and Highland Village. Museums. Houston has some of the best museums in the country. Science museum is great. Fine Arts museum is great. Holocaust museum, Menil, etc., etc. Also, in the same vicinity is the Houston Zoo, which in my personal opinion is a pretty good zoo, as they go, and will be really good once all the renovation is done. Entertainment. Houston has tons of theater seats and live music. Just check to see what's in town. Random. San Jacinto Monument/Battleship Texas. Go downtown to the Chase tower and something like the 61st floor (somewhere around there), there is an observation deck that gives you an awesome view of the city. Not that I know what it means, but at 75 stories JPMorgan Chase Tower is the tallest composite building in the world. Take a tour of Rice University - I didn't go or anything, but I've taken some summer classes there - it is a truly underappreciated university on a national level given its beautiful campus and quality of education provided. Finally, if you are here 3-4 days, and have a car, and want to check Austin out, depending on traffic (in both cities), it can be a under 3 hour drive.
If you get sick of strip clubs and restaurants, go to a blues club and hear some of the finest blues musicians on the planet right here in Houston, the home of the blues. Or, if you like art, check out the Menil....
You will never ever have a burrito like one from Freebirds. They got two joints in town. http://www.freebirds.com/ Also the Men's Club near the galleria has the best strippers. After all we are the best strip club city in the south. Might as well take in the sites. My buddy from Chicago came down and he said he never seen so many strip clubs. They are all over town. He also calls me telling me he can't wait to come back to Houston just to have a Monster burrito from Freebirds. To enjoy true Texans Gluttony go check out Freebirds and get a Monster burrito. Check out the museum district. Check out the Kemah boardwalk. Check out Nasa. Check out the Galleria. Check out the pyramids at Moody Gardens in Galveston.
Jeff, I am left with no other choice. This is one of the ****tiest cities The roads aren't paved. Every ride is bumpy. It's too big. There are places in Houston I've never been to Too many bad drivers Too many illegal Hispanics Bad weather - I haven't seen the sun since I've been back here Our traffic lights are yellow and hanging from wires Driving down 45 towards Downtown just makes me nauseous Most woman in Houston also make me nauseous Traffic 24/7 no matter what hwy you're on Houston is a relatively poor city There is a lot of uncut grass around town We have no zoning - and this is exactly what makes our city considered a toilet I can go on and on and on... Now this is all in retrospect. Just stop and think about it and you'll be able to understand what I'm talking about. Ever since I could remember this is the only place I ever wanted to reside....then I visited Dallas and never looked back.
Wow I didn't know there was a Freebirds in Houston. There is one close to where I live in Dallas and used to go there very often. I still think Chipotle is a lot better.
I'm guessing you are looking to piss off people from this city that really do love it here. All this crap you are talking and then you say you go to dallas and never look back. Well good for you. Dallas sucks monkey balls and has a lot of freaking wannabee new yorkers.
most of the stuff that isn't subjective in this post is just flat out false. you haven't seen the sun since you've been back here?? in november we had less than an inch of rain for the entire month. what in the world are you talking about? traffic 24/7?? really?? i live right off of I-10 on th west side. last friday i had to be at the courthouse at 9 a.m. from kirkwood to downtown, my commute was 20 minutes. relatively poor city?? ummmm...no. uncut grass?? seriously?? dallas is a hole, friend. it's a city surrounded by other cities which are sucking the money out of the tax base. it's on its way to being detroit.
not to argue that there aren't better places to live out there. there definitely are, but some of your points are misguided this is true of plenty of places, dallas included. try california. or anywhere on the east coast. Heck, one of my favorite places is Denver and the freaking construction/traffic there is unbelievable. So many highways with so much construction can be a blight on the eyes and painful at time, but Houston actually is really well laid out in regards to traffic flow, highway options, etc. (as is Dallas, I think) It's just impossible to keep up with all of the people, at the end of the day. It is large...though I don't see how having places in the city you've never been has any impact on whether or not it is a good palce to live. I was in Philadelphia for 4 years and there were craploads of places I'd never been. um....ok. There are a lot of hispanics, many of whom are probably illegal. Weather isn't perfect, that's for certain. But again, plenty of places with more rain, plenty of places with less. Houston's weather is a personal choice. I'm with you...not my favorite. i don't see this all too much agreed and agreed doesn't seem like it to me, but don't know... strange comment...can't say if it's true or not...or how that really matters.
dude, you are an admitted traitor, no gray are here. hell, i left houston long ago but i still love my hometown, why are you even in the hangout with all us losers?
Some of the stuff that people list as things to do in Houston are pretty interesting. Kemah - not in Houston Galveston - not in Houston San Jacinto Monument - not in Houston Brazos Bend - not in Houston NASA - Go across the street, and you're not in Houston So, nobody actually lives in Houston, there's nothing to do in Houston...does Houston really exist?? hmmm...
1. its not going to be cold like NYC Isiah Thomas cold. 2. Go to the Texans game (avoid concessions). The Colts will be playing, the stadium is really nice. And you get to see a hall of fame QB in his prime.. PEYTON MANNING. 3. FOOD - Great for Cajun/Creole, Vietnamese, Steaks, BarBQ I suggest Pappadeuxs, Kim Son, Taste of Texas, Goode Company 4. The place formerly known as the Summit is now a big BAPTIST Church. This was noted as a sacred ground because Vernon Maxwell blessed the Rockets 1st championship with the final 7 points in game 7 vs the Knicks. Bless Vernon. 5. There will lots of kids wearing Vince Young jerseys. This is where he's from. Reliant Stadium is his house. 6. as mentioned earlier, lots of 'clubs' in htown.
