What's funny is that out of 20 posts in this thread, only one person actually gave their yearly salary ($0/yr students don't count). * highfives mc mark * ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
Well, right now my responsibilities are small, because when I came in in January, they were in the middle of a major project, and now it is wrapping up, so I am having trouble getting help learning the structure of things and how they work (it would be more efficient if they just did it themselves), so I am delegated as "utility" man. Any odd job, such as adding a fix or debugging a "simple" problem in the code is relegated to me. Last year, I came in in January and worked through the summer, and they gave me a full feature to code and document for our project (I learned more during this time than in High School and College combined). The project I am working on pertains to wireless internet and cell phone messaging. Basically we are designing a "gateway", although over time, and with management changing our requirements, it has evolved into a little more than that. At this point, I think I will continue in Telecom, despite the late layoffs and poor stock performance. They really like me at Nortel. You are right, DoD, they are a great company to work for. From what I have learned, they pay a little less than, say, Cisco, but they are not hard-asses and allow you to have very flexible schedules while dressing quite casually. I am enjoying myself. In time, I think it might be cool to be a computer games programmer, but I have little to no experience with that right now, and it will probably just remain a pipe dream. While interning with Dell I worked really hard during my first week. Without even working a month, they signed me to a 6 yr,$42 million contract. Now I just lay back, sit at my desk and get paid. I drive a white Bentley, and I frequently call in sick to avoid going to work. I don't give a damn about my job, or anything else for that matter. ------------------ "Oh No..." -Bill Walton in 97 just before Stockton's buzzer beater

Well, this turned out to be quite the social experiment. Nobody was willing to give up their salary information. I accidentally stumbled into this when I was 17. I was working in the seafood department at a P&C grocery store. I worked closely with the Meat guy. We were pretty close and one day I asked him, stupidly, 'so you must do pretty good, what do you make here anyway?'. He was nice about it, but he never answered the question. When I got home I realized the subject was taboo. I now know from experience that salaries can cause quite a controversy in theeveryday work environment. It's a very competitive issue. So competitive that it changes relationships within the office. Strange thing, money. anyway, I find it interesting that it carried over into the BBS. Dead silence. ------------------ humble, but hungry.
PSJ you are so right! Money has never been an issue with me. Being an actor, I've come to realize that I will always be at the lower end of the earnings scale. I've never had a problem with that. And to think that success is any way tied to the amount of money one makes is just silly. As been stated before, success is a state of mind. Whether you make $5 a year or $100,000. And you know what? I've found living a life free of stress is much more rewarding than keeping up with the Jones's. ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
all those people that were so quick to brag abou their SAT scores dont make jack sh*t..thats where the silence comes from...pretty funny i make 4500 a month that is unfortunately before taxes and 401 k.. ------------------ "no matter how good she looks someone... somewhere..is tired of her sh*t"
I didn't post a salary cuz i don't have one now...but, if you wanna know what I made before I quit the gallery in Dec: $21,000. Had I satyed, I would have gone up to maybe 23-25 at the beginning of this year. Wow...great. It wasn't worth it for what I had to do and what/who I had to put up with. Therefore, I decided i could get my PhD and teach where I will probably make a dazzling 50k a year. Mark, What does your wife do? My wife will always make more and if ever one of us ad to stop working...it would be me. I always get the, "Doesn't that bother you?" question. I think that is stupid and just ask, "why, who cares?" ------------------ Whitey will pay.
Salaries are very much taboo. I started this thread almost tongue-in-cheek and really didn't expect people to post their salaries. But at the same time, I thought the "taboo" effect you mentioned wouldn't carry over to a BBS. Why should it? Because we're in a society that, like it or not, uses wealth/salary/scores as a measure of success. This is the same effect as what some of you guys talking about SAT scores may be feeling in high school. It's competition. Salaries are to adults much like SAT's are to teens entering college. Salaries aren't indicative of intelligence either. I consider rimbaud one of the more intelligent people on this board and like reading his posts, yet he's not earning a salary at the moment. Why should he be thought of as "inferior"? I'm amazed at the depth of conversation people like mrpaige, TheFreak, Pole, shanna, Will, rimbaud, RM95, etc can maintain. Who knows what the above users make, but more importantly why should we care? Why should we care what the hell they made on their SAT's? We make fun of George W. Bush as being an idiot yet he scored over 1200 on his SAT and most people that scored higher than him would crumble under the pressure his position brings. I hate politics and operate under the belief that "they're all crooks, be they Democrats or Republicans", but at the same time I could never handle the pressure they do, yet I probably make more than many of them. Teachers don't get paid squat, yet they teach the people that eventually make double and triple their salaries. I respect their patience and desire to teach far more than I respect my own profession. Police officers often put their lives on the line and often make nothing compared to me whose butt sits in front of a monitor for hours during the day. I respect their profession far more than my own. As another example, so many make fun of liberal arts majors as having "worthless" degrees, but I found that some of the most intelligent people I've conversed with were liberal arts majors (especially philosophy majors). We live in a competitive society. A society I think fosters so much competition that it's detrimental to the well-being of its citizens. Test scores and salaries aren't the most important things in life. Enjoying the few years you have on this planet is, and if you're too worried about 2-4% raises and 1300 SAT's, you're wasting those few years. Do what you enjoy, and make enough to retire well if you can. But that's just my opinion... ------------------ "So you say you want some intelligent responses? I say give me something intelligent to respond to." -- Dimwits beware, B-Ball freak tells it like it is. Sing it bro!
DoD, Pure beauty! I must first ammend that by saying I would have said that even if you had not said nice things about me. After reading that, I think you would enjoy "How are we to Live?" by Peter Singer. He is an ethics philosopher and deals with the foundation of those very ideals in our society. Anyway, don't get me started on salary and its problems... ------------------ Whitey will pay. [This message has been edited by rimbaud (edited April 12, 2001).]
Rimmy She is a jazz singer that dabbles in voiceovers. She also the personal assistant to the President and CEO of a company that writes software for on-line trading. They are about to go public in a few months and I can't wait to see what happens with her options! ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
Jazz singer?!?! That is the greatest profession in the world. I had a friend who was a voice major...she was pondering making a move as a jazz singer, but was hesitant...I always tried to get her to do it. I only heard her with operas, but she had a sultry voice...would be great. Anyway, she has since dropped off the face of the earth. If done right, vocals can make me fall in love. That is why Sarah Vaughn has a place in my heart that my wife can never reach - despite her singing in the shower! ------------------ Whitey will pay.
