i see no reason why we shouldn't at the minimum have a roster spot open for him. give him a contract and see what happens.
we will have competition for keeping him. http://draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=1410 9th paragraph [it won't let me copy & paste] we're gonna get into a bidding war over him with Phoenix [and probably end up losing ANOTHER pg...]
It says this: John Lucas has parlayed his impressive play in the Vegas Summer League into quite a few offers for guaranteed NBA contracts. He is currently looking at no less then 5 offers for two-year guaranteed contracts from teams in search of a backup point guard. The two teams believed to be in the lead currently are his current summer league club Houston as well as the Phoenix Suns , who like his potential to push the tempo of the game and run their dynamic offense behind Steve Nash. Question: Does the money that we would use to sign JL3 come from the MLE?
CD needs to ask himself a few questions. Is there going to be some scrub on the team that that does not have anything close to the potential as JLIII? Does JLIII come from a good basketball family? Does JLIII have a specific skill set that the Rockets desperately need? If the answer is yes to any of these questions then I think you need to try and find him a spot on the roster. If the answer is yes to all of these questions then I think you damn well better find him a spot on the roster. Will Marcus Williams come into the league and have a better year than JLIII or have a better career? I say no and I really believe he is a guy the Rockets were looking at.
Also, did you notice that Phoenix reportedly likes him for his ability to push the tempo -- an ability the Rockets currently lack. I hope we can get him signed, but the lingering question is whether JVG would ever use a rookie PG. Come to think of it, JVG would rather sign and play JL3's dad.
He's probably a better fit with the Suns than Rockets. I could see him getting small but good minutes behind Nash.
According to Vegas Summer League site, Lucas Jr. is 23. Height - 5-11 Weight - 165 DOB - 11/21/82 But why would the Rockets sign him when Rick Brunson is available for less money?
On 610 the other day, Adam Wexler asked CD about signing JL3, and Dawson totally dodged the issue. He talked about JL3's stellar play and raved about the summer league itself, but he made NO mention of the Rockets wanting to sign JL3 (not even a "Hey, we'd love to have him" lip service quote or anything out of CD). I find that ominous, personally.
Was it JVG who said they be wiling to take JLIII on if the signed another established PG? Maybe Rockets are going after V-Span instead of Banks?
