Dang. That was literally my first pc. Except I had the far more advanced DuoDisk instead of the 2 separate Disk II floppies. No hard drive, either.
I can't speak to the video editing, but for gaming a 4070 or 4080 (or their variants) should last you at least 3-4 years unless you want to have "max FPS @ 800 bajillion hertz" that the majority of the population wouldn't notice the difference or care. And unless you play a lot of FPS games, it could last you even longer. I also don't know if they've fixed the issues with the 4090 cables/connectors igniting. Maybe they have by now. You can also look at things like the 4070 TI Super, the 4080 Super, etc., but I don't know what prices are like on those nowadays. Sometimes the variant models of the 4070 or the 4080 are the better deals in terms of performance/$.
Anybody remember the IBM PC Junior? I had one of those. Or, the family did for our first computer. Talking about a piece of junk. Thing was obsolete almost as soon as it hit the shelves.
Thanks, A million frames per second won't be the top priority. I just need enough to not drop frames and get an image of 4k or above on the video card. Thanks.
I need a new PC before support stops next year for mine from Microsoft. It seems like I should buy one before Trump lays 60% tariffs on imported Chinese goods at which time PC systems/parts will go up in price soon thereafter? I may build one but not sure. I just need a budget PC. I'm not a gamer any longer and I would use my Xbox One if I did that anyway. But, I want current or current minus one generation CPU/chipsets. Well, this sucks. I'm still pissed at Microsoft for obsoleting my otherwise perfectly fine CPU.
14"MBP M4 pro - Space Black 12-Core CPU 16-Core GPU 24GB Unified Memory 512GB SSD Storage iPad Pro 11'' M4 - 256GB Game on XBOX series X (About to upgrade my son gaming PC to 5700x3D, RX 6800 16mb, 32 GB Ram.)
What's hilarious is, if you go look around at sites selling PCs, then they are selling all the PCs of older gen CPUs that aren't compatible with Windows 11. Sure, you may be able to flip a setting in a registry edit to install Windows 11. But, then you can't get any updates thereafter. So, all these places are basically selling bricks come Oct. 2025. It's like they are preying on the uninformed to buy these things.
If somebody needs to stretch the life of a Windows 10 box for a while, then do what is possible and put some more Coins in the Piggy Bank. Then go shopping a few years from now for the latest Tech.
Since you have knowledge of the Mac World, do you think that some people will buy a Mac Mini M4 instead of continuing in the Microsoft World? The reviews that I have read for the Mini M4 have been quite positive with the Bang for the Buck being often cited. Another alternative is to get a modest Windows capable Mini to hold one over for a few years. One could also setup an existing Windows 10 box to dual boot with Linux.
Unless you’re a gamer, a Mac Mini M4 makes a lot of sense. You can get almost any software you would use on a Windows PC and even better, they last forever with Mac OS. My 2013 MacBook Air, which was $1100, is still usable, but my 2012 Alienware m18 r2 which was $2500ish, is barely usable by my 9yo for Roblox, let alone daily light usage for work.
I'm tempted to upgrade my 5800x to a 5700x3D. Everyone is fearmongering that prices will go up soon. Upgrading my CPU could extend my rig's life a little longer. I only game at 1440p, so a 3D chip would be better and I could possibly sell the old CPU.
I am just about done with Windows. On 10 right now. Not going to 11 because they took away docking taskbar vertically. Been using vertical taskbar for a decade and now it’s gone. But I got two issues with win 10. My iPhone heic pictures load so slow on windows 10. Thumbnail previews are always messing up. Also win 10 doesn’t have WiFi 6ghz support. I thought about getting a Mac mini but I don’t know if I can deal with the dock.
