Wow! This is the best book I've read in a long time, and I read a lot.

The exploration in itself reads like a suspenseful thriller, but there is so much more to this book. It's written with fascinating tidbits and stories about life at the time America's 100th anniversary was being celebrated. This book has it all.

The expedition story is full of spellbinding suspense and day to day personal accounts written like a thriller. The planning and recruiting for the exploration was really interesting. You could easily visualize what they were experiencing on their exploration, because it's written with breathtaking details of everything seen, felt, and heard along the way.

On top of it all there are so many cool facts and stories about the various beliefs regarding the North Pole and arctic sea at that time. Some were down right bizarre. That lure for the truth was too compelling for explorers to resist.

I loved the stories about the inventors, maps and cartographers, scientists, explorers and new frontiers, traders and nomadic tribes in Russia and Alaska, and those behind the vision to make the trip possible.

I highly recommend this book, and guarantee you will not only be immersed in suspense, but come away with a few really cool facts you never knew.

Everything Hampton Sides writes is a good book. I highly recommend "Blood and Thunder" if anyone's interested in the West.

Same with Erik Larson, and some others, Krakaur, etc...
