I just finished A Scanner Darkly, by Philip K. Dick, just in time for the movie. I read it back in college, but now I kinda wish I hadn't reread it so I could go into the movie with more of an open mind. I'm also doing this daily Bible reading program that gets you through the whole thing in one year. I'm six weeks into it and so far I've kept up, but we'll see how that works out when school starts back up in the fall.
Just finished: And started the sequal: Both AMAZING books if you like Harry Potter, so good in fact that the movie comes out December 15th ! I can not wait !!! DD
He has interesting ideas, and his ideas have shaped the actions of many of our 'leaders,' which makes those ideas even more fascinating. But I'm no more a Straussian from reading Strauss than I am a Cenobite from reading Clive Barker.
This: I also want to read Peter Carey's new book but loathe jumbo hardbacks so am waiting like a good boy.
I read "Jack Maggs" a few weeks ago. It was decent, but nowhere near as good as "Illywhacker" or "Bliss." Richard Flanagan is another great Aussie author. "Gould's Book of Fish" in particular.
confederacy of dunces - ive been meaning to read this book for years. i finally bought it for a vacation im on right now. one of the funniest books ive read, and im only on page 75. its very rare that a book can make me laugh out loud as im reading it. the characters are great - a bunch of degenerates and ingrates, but charming in their own way. lonely planet - yucatan. im in the yucatan right now, so a good travel guide is always handy.
I have been meaning to read Bliss. I have The Unusual Life of Tristan Smith, True History of the Kelly Gang, and My Life as a Fake. I enjoyed Fake the most although Kelly Gang was amazing for his use of language. But, again, I got more overall enjoyment from Fake.
The second one is an interesting read. The history of Odessa Permian football from the 70's on up to where Friday Night Lights picks up.
The world is flat by Friedman. Still working on The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbon. Just got a couple of new ones, Collapse by Jared Diamond (the guy who wrote Guns Germs and Steel) and am seriously looking at investing in a massive two volume set of collected essays and letters by Mark Twain - my favorite author. EDIT: Like FB, research has clogged my reading time. Just read An Air that Kills and a bunch of global warming books/articles for a couple of research papers.
I am doing research now, so I am pretty much just reading books on lawmen, outlaws, and gunfighters of the old west. The current one I am reading is called The Shooters by Leon Metz.
Vanishing Tracks - Four years among the snow leopards of Nepal, - By Darla Hillard, I have been looking forward for months to read this book.
