Uh oh, disciple eh? , yea i know people who like Weezer, and i know people who dont, me personally, i find all their stuff good. I actually havent listened to any of the cds yet, I have been stuck in class all day, will get around to it tonight.
A very cool friend gave me a gift certificate to Lou's records out here in So Cal for my B'day. These are the cd's I picked up: Kings of Leon - Aha Shake Heartbreak. This is the second lp of theirs that I have gotten. Both are really good and it looks like these guys are on the verge of breaking out. They are backing up U2 on their current tour, but more importantly they are getting strong airplay out here with the 'Bucket'. The Delgados - Hate. Can't tell you how much I am enjoying this one; it's quite brilliant. There is a Beatles spin with 'All You Need is Hate' but the music is both lush and brash with excellent production by Dave Friedman (you can really tell it's him) who has done the last few Flaming Lips LP's (amongst others) including the monumental The Soft Bulletin. The Wrens - the Meadowlands. Don't know a lot about these guys except they only put out an lp once in a blue moon. This one was recorded between 1999 - 2003 to give you an idea. The tunes are very diverse but always catchy. I'm liking it so far. The Libertines - Self titled This Brit punk band sounds alot like early Clash. No surprise I suppose since Mick Jones produces. I am lead to believe they are quite popular in England, but none of it is really clicking with me, yet.
Just changed the CDs out in my car: "The Fragile" - Yes "The Game" - Queen "Ghost in the Machine" - The Police "Music From Big Pink" - The Band "The Who by Numbers" - The Who "Licensed to Ill" - Beastie Boys Tomorrow at work: "Trilogy" - Emerson, Lake, and Palmer "One Foot in the Grave" - Beck "Summerteeth" - Wilco "Stereopathic Soul Manure" - Beck
The Replacements - TIM Devil Dogs - Saturday Night Fever The Clash - Give'em enough rope Guitar Gangsters - Powwe Chords for England Motorhead - Bomber Billy Bragg - William Bloke
Some good picks there, especially with "Tim". Been meaning to pick up that Clash CD for some time. How is the Billy Bragg one? Is it similar to Wilco, or do you know, Weezer? Currently listening to "Discipline" by King Crimson.
Manny, been thinking of getting Queen's "A Night at the Opera" and "The Game", I have read a little bit about both over at allmusic, but was wondering if you could give me a little run down about em as well. I already have a Queens greatest hit cd (one of the many), but I think I am going to get these, that way I can hear some of their non radio stuff.
Lately I have been listening to "Yoshimi vs. the Pink Robots" by the Flaming Lips. I dunno, I have been flying a lot cross country and its nice and mellow, and combined with a valium... sleepy sleepy
"A Night at the Opera" is generally regarded as the best overall Queen album and has such tracks as: "You're my Best Friend" "Death on Two Legs" "I'm in Love with my Car" (Roger Taylor vocal) "'39" "The Prophet's Song" (absolutely otherwordly song) and of course, "Bohemian Rhapsody". It is a very eclectic mix and can be a little hard to digest and even bewildering on first listen. However the songwriting and musicianship is so top-notch and tight, that it does not take long to see the beauty on each track. "The Game" might be better for a beginner as it is not as eclectic (at least to me) and has 2 of their biggest hits ever in "Another One Bites the Dust" and "Crazy Little Thing Called Love". However, lots of other great songs on that one such as: "Don't Try Suicide" "Sail Away Sweet Sister" (my favorite Brian May song ever) "Play the Game" "Dragon Attack" "Save Me" I think this was the first Queen album to use synthesizers. I don't think you can go wrong no matter which one you pick - just do what I would do - buy both!
Get Forgiven - the.seximals. On constant rotation. My favorite new album in a pretty long while. Manny: Let me know what you think of Planet Waves.
I like it a lot although "Desire" is still my all-time favorite Dylan album, but definitely one that is in the top 10 (but don't ask me to rank them because that is too hard!). Favorite songs off "Planet Waves" include: "On a Night Like This" "The Wedding Song" both versions of "Forever Young" and "Something There Is About You". That last song is the perfect song, to me, of the greatness of Dylan - lyrics, vocals, instrumentation from the people playing with him (the best in the Band) plus he plays a pretty mean harmonica on it as well. I'll be sending you my solo artists list by email in probably about 2 hours. Ciao.
Good choices, Manny. My favorite on that record's "Never Say Goodbye," but that's because my real favorite ("Nobody 'Cept You") is an outtake. I'll look forward to your mail.
