i heard that syd lives with his mother and doesnt do music anymore, but does lots of painting. supposedly, when he finishes a piece he will burn it. in a way, that is kind of cool. the act of painting is an end into itself. in another way its completely looney.
Wow, thanks for all that. Extremely informative. That was better than reading a biography on some site like MTV or VH1 because it's got your opinions and more details, so good job.
he did do a very good job of explaining the history of pink floyd. when i read there biography i was VERY sad for Syd Barrett people loved him, especially the ladies. and he tooks tons of acid among other drugs by himself. but the bad thing is all there friends and people just hanging around spike his drinks and stuff with bunches of acid all the time and it just completely fried his brain. one story that was very sad is they hadnt seen syd for a few years and one day he showed up at the studio and i believe acted like everything was cool and picked up a guitar and started to play. he pretty much ignored everyone and and after a little while without saying anything got up and left.
Deckard, your rundown of Mott The Hoople guitarists was spot on. All of them perfect for the band in their own way and at the time. Luther Grosvener (aka Ariel Bender), I am surprised you know about. He was only in the band a short time and shines most, IMHO on The Mott The Hoople Live album. Alas, I was never able to get into the Spooky Tooth albums, and I really tried. However, there is A Luther Grosnvener solo album (only import back in the day) that is quite good. While playing professionaly I always took my cues from the Mott guitarists; perhaps Mick Ronson most, but I loved them all. Freak, you simply MUST get Brain Capers. It was supposed to be their farewell album and they really let it rip accordingly> I also recommend the official live album which was recorded side A on Broaway and side B in London. Finally, the two Syd Barrett solo albums are VERY cool. They are raw for sure and all the blunders and mistakes are left in. Manny, as Pink Floyd lover you owe it to yourself to get these.
I'll probably get the Syd stuff some day, but it would be stuff that wouldn't be listened too much, I am afraid. More stuff: 26 Mixes for Cash - Aphex Twin Anthology 1947-1972 - Muddy Waters The Sky Is Crying: The History of Elmore James - Elmore James Close to the Edge - Yes
just got home from REM with Bright Eyes as the support act great performance by both bands, Stipe was on fire, favs were orange crush and electrolyte their lighting and very large wide screen above the stage and the graphics they showed in it were outstanding and my first opportunity to see Connor and band.... love to see them on their own in a smaller venue
Got another batch of CDs today, will listen to each one of these over the next couple of days: "The Band" - The Band "The Who Sings My Generation" - The Who "Sheer Heart Attack" - Queen "90125" - Yes "Regatta de Blanc" - The Police "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" - Black Sabbath "Aqualung" - Jethro Tull "Foxtrot" - Genesis "Planet Waves" - Bob Dylan "Beggar's Banquet" - The Rolling Stones "Trilogy" - Emerson, Lake, and Palmer "Source Tags & Codes" - ...And You Will Know Us by the Trail of the Dead Plus some lesser Miles CDs like "You're Under Arrest", "Quiet Nights", etc.
Let's see...surprisingly, I've been listening to a bunch of CDs I burned to my laptop before I sold them (marked with *). Oleander-Unwind* Beck-Guero Seven Mary Three-The Economy of Sound* Ben Harper-Live from Mars Weezer-Pinkerton Pat Green-Live at Billy Bob's Texas* Hieroglyphics-Full Circle Madvillain-Madvillainy Parachutes-Coldplay* Yes-The Very Best of Yes*
Yeah, that's a great song. I just realized that this may be the first time I've ever posted a list of CDs I was listening to without including a Dave Matthews Band album. Even though I did spin Busted Stuff earlier this week.
This can be for anyone, but how is Becks new album? I dont have any of his old stuff or anything, I have heard the hits on the radio like "loser", would it be beneficial to listen to some of his older stuff before I get Guero?
Listening alot to: Iron Maiden - Dance of Death (came out a year and a half ago and I'm still jamming to it) Ozzy - Prince of Darkness (nice box set with a ton of rare tracks) Blaze - The Tenth Dimension (each new Blaze album is better than the last. While Blaze's time in Iron Maiden was uninspiring, his solo stuff has been absolutely amazing)
huuhhh,....thats some independent stuff right here. Have you checked out the Sage Francis record?? And are you familiar with the Anticon stuff???
Yes, mainly Odelay. That album has such classics as "Where's It At" (Got Two Turntables and a Microphone), "Devil's Haircut", "The New Pollution", "Jackass", and many others. The Dust Brothers play a major role in that record just like they did with "Paul's Boutique" by the Beastie Boys. Guess who plays a major role in "Guero"? Yup, you guessed it - the Dust Brothers. "Midnite Vultures" is also somewhat similar to "Guero" but it is sorta messy and can be unfocused at times which is not true for "Odelay" and "Guero". Personally, "Sea Change" might be my favorite Beck album but it is very melancholy and nothing like "Odelay", "Midnite Vultures", and "Guero". But you owe it to yourself, Flyer, as a blossoming Manny disciple, to pick up both "Odelay" and "Guero", ASAP.
anyone else get the Antony and the Johnsons cd.... I am a Bird now damn that guy has an amazing voice wow find me a more beautiful voice... as an aside it also contains appearances by Lou Reed (who i think found Antony and had him as one of his back-up singers), Rufus Wainright, Devandra and Boy George..... he played Downunder a few months ago at a Leonard Cohen tribute show and from all accounts stole the show from some very big names just get it!!!!!
Just got today: Pink Floyd- Animals Pink Floyd- Wish You Were Here Weezer- Pinkerton Weezer- Green Album Weezer- Maladroit Beck- Mellow Gold Beck- Odelay
