Yeah, Ocasek produced 'No Lunch'. 'Through the Darkness' was their last album, and I think Tony Visconti produced that one. 'No Lunch' has some songs from the debut on it- they re-worked them/sped them up though. Jesse Malin, the singer/songwriter for them has a solo album out- you heard it? Supposedly it's a lot different from DG.
I think Green Day has the right song writing formula, and obviously works (sold gazillions of recs)... they have hook ladden poppy catchy pop songs...nothing wrong with that! if you like Green Day, go get THE EXPLODING HEARTS- GUITAR ROMANTIC record. You'll love it 1100%. TRUST ME on this one.
Solo stuff is great. Not glampunk, more "Ryan Adams like" He came to Hou, show kicked...! Had the audience in the palm of his hand...
Good, fair analysis. Annnnd, WOW! I just previewed all of the Guitar Romantic CD on iTunes, and it's safe to say that Green Day just miiiight have influenced them. They sound just like 'em. I think I'll be getting it. Thanks.
The Exploding Hearts sound nothing like Green Day, and they had zero influence on their sound. Now if you want to say the Exploding Hearts sound exactly like The Boys, I would agree. anyway, my list: Greg Sage - Straight Ahead The Wipers - Over The Edge Consonant - Consonant Bad Brains - Omega Sessions Chavez - Ride The Fader
listen to the first 2 green day albums and mix it with part buzzcocks and part boys... I wasn't saying Green Day sounds like Exploding hearts or vice versa. I was saying IF YOU LIKE GREEN DAY, THEN YOU'LL LIKE THE EXPLODING HEARTS.
Not trying to start any kind of argument, but I really doubt that. I think what you might see are bands trying to sound a bit like what is on American Idiot in order to get signed or producers starting to try to mold bands into that sound (haven't they already been doing that for 10 years?), but I don't think too many people are sitting in their garages or bedrooms really being influenced by American Idiot when they could just listen to Kerplunk or Dookie if they are a fan of Greenday. Even younger people just starting out I think would eventually find their way to the older albums and be more influenced by those. Just my opinion. Moving on. I've mentioned this band several times on this board, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone else talk about them. (maybe you guys just don't like them, haha) Q and Not U Check out the albums: "No Kill No Beep Beep" (older) and their newer one called," Power". I believe both albums were produced by Ian McKay (Minor Threat/Fugazi) These guys are just really really good. They are one of the best live shows I have ever seen (seen them 3 times). The engergy is incredible and they all play 4 or 5 different things.
Ready to Die - Notorious B.I.G. How Do U Want It/California Love (CD single) - 2Pac Stars and Topsoil - Cocteau Twins
that first song on biggies ready to die (2nd disk) is so good. you can never go wrong with some bone thugs and harmony.
Ready to Die is one disc - I think you are meaning Life After Death, which I had at one time but got rid of.
Message From Beat Street: The Best of Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel & The Furious Five - Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five All the Greatest Hits - Zapp & Roger All Eyez on Me - 2Pac Life After Death - Notorious B.I.G. Greatest Funkin' Hits - George Clinton The Best of Parliament: Give Up the Funk - Parliament Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z. - 2Pac
YES! ive got those and a couple of the other trojan box sets. there's so much of that stuff and its all "high" quality (pun intended).
finally find time to check in this thread: I am really on an electronic buzz recently: Stratus * fear of magnetism (a mixture of air and dj shadow with some prog influences. Did remixes for calexico and lambchop - beautiful) M83 * RedSeas & LostGhosts (this record is taking me away right now. Like the sound of hundred keyboard sphere layers over mighty wall of soundy drums. Excellent french electronic band Jaga (Jaga Jazzist) - what we must (Intoxicating stuff. Fusion like electronic, very intense and fresh. Pretty hard to describe. Mars Voltas favourite band at the moment) Lali Puna - faking the books (beautiful german electronic music from with some help of members from the notwist) Boom Bip - blue eyed in the red room (a bit of boards of canada influences with some paints from vangelis (?).) 13 & God - s/t (brand new record from the new band featureing the Notwist and Themselves (anticon)) Very new music. I haven't heard anything like this. Tord Gustavsen Trio - the ground (excellent very calm jazz record - deep, light, ripe, dark - wow) and some warmer stuff: Vic Chesnutt - Ghetto Bells (In my opinion his best album so far. His sidekicks on the record are Bill Frisell and Van Dyke Parks - go imagine). Alasdair Roberts - No earthly man (scotish traditionals sung in the vain of Bonnie Prince Billy stlye. He even produced this album. A mighty pile of songs, intense as hell.) Maybe somebody knows some of this stuff and tells me what he thinks.
