    Fairly happy with my decisions:
ride out storm so I can immediately assess damage to secure my home (don't want to evac and find 4-day old water damage), leave afterwards to stay with friends if no power.

Bought the right groceries that will last a week+ w/o power.

I do wish I had bought a LOT more ice, though no amount of ice will last more than a weekend tops.

Also, I'm at least tempted to invest in a Verizon mobile broadband card. Only way to stay connected w/o power, even if you're limited to the laptop's battery.

A chainsaw investment also wouldn't be bad.

You should purchase a car A/C adapter. Start the car, let it run, plug the adapter into the cigarette lighter, plug the laptop, mobile phone, etc. into the other end, and you can fully recharge your battery w/o using hardly any gas. Sell at Circuit City for $80

The wife has a hybrid Ford Escape with an electric outlet built in. So we're set - I'm just neurotic about burning gas when you don't know how long you'll be without. I was amazed to see the amount of cars just cruising around the past several days. Until I stop seeing 2-block long gas lines...uh uh

Not get drunk during the 'cane so that I will not be dry heaving while cutting down trees early the next morning.

First, I am going to hit craigslist in a couple of weeks and buy a used generator when people sale the ones they bought this week.

If a CAT 4 or higher shows up, I am leaving town.

If I can't afford that or something, I will:

    - Fill up a cooler with ice and put my perishable foods in it
    - Make sure I have a hand crank radio or 2
    - Fill up my propane tank so I can grill afterwards
    - get a car A/C adapter
    - buy a crapload of batteries
    - Get a VARIETY of foods to eat while the power is out

I just never thought power would be out for nearly a week after the storm game through. Never thought that. But now that I know...I will be doing all those things.

We were prepared at my prodding because I thought Ike was the real deal...but we didn't get enough ice and a generator. I thought we would be without power at least 3 days. Boy, I sure was wrong!

We brought all of our frozen meats to my dude's brother's house and we cooked most of them. Fed all of his immediate family. I lost a good amount of money on food that was in the fridge. :(

Now, we're eating food from my parents'. I filled up on gas before the storm and I don't have to worry about filling up until this weekend. Hopefully, it won't be as bad.

I will ride out another a cat 1 or 2 storm but I think I am leaving if it's a cat 3 but definitely leaving for a 4 or 5!

You can never be too prepared. Look at Galveston. :(

Tri-fuel generator and hook it up to my gas. Gas never went out at my house so that would have worked sweetly.

Well the G in my name stands for Galveston. I have to say this one has broken my spirit. I no longer live in Galveston, but close enough. All my family and friends are in Galveston or Galveston county. It's just horrible that so many have lost everything. I'm considering moving inland so not to have to worry about this anymore. Austin, San Antonio, or the unthinkable, Dallas. Really at this point spirits are really broken seeing my city to hell and I just don't want to have to deal with it again.

    absolutely, positively 100%!

this re-enforced my rule on this..we have trees in houses all over the neighborhood....i can't imagine what cat 4 winds would have done. i think roofs would be popped. i have zero intention of staying for that..none at all...no matter what bill white or judge emmett tell me, i'm really gone if we're looking at that sort of storm.
