All of these arguments are specious. Comparing the point spread between Trump and Gianforte, or a governor's race vs a House race is like saying the Rockets won last night's game against the Bucks by 6 points when they lost to Warriors the night before by 20 -- so they must be getting better. Who the opponents are matters. Who the voters are matters. When the election happens and what the context is matters. Even the assault is a giant red herring. There is literally no lesson you can draw about the direction of the country by looking at 3 data points in Montana.

Good point. Tell that to the Democrat party sycophants in the media who are insisting ad nauseam that the margin of victory in the Montana race tells us that the Democrats are looking strong as a result. That is where this kind of talk comes from and it is exactly what the author of the article you quoted is trying to refute.

Policies like assaulting anyone you disagree with? Democrat policies tend to be more popular overall than Republican ones, the Democrats just have a horrible messaging problem. Look at the unpopularity of the healthcare bill that just got passed for an example of this.

or... it tells you that a significant percentage of republicans will vote for a violent criminal as long as he is a republican violent criminal...

Instead, I just avoid publications that would write such claptrap.

Probably more like using opinion from a random blog.

Suburban Georgia will be a much more interesting barometer for Democrats in their runoff election instead of heavily republican states such as a Kansas and Montana.
