I guess we sound alike. I also grew up in Houston (well, actually Spring).

Your accent is the lowest common denominator of American speech. Unless you're a SoCal surfer, no one thinks you have an accent. And really, you may not even be from the West at all, you could easily be from Florida or one of those big Southern cities like Dallas or Atlanta.

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

88% Inland North. I don't say pop, unless I say I'm gonna pop your b**** ass in the face. Rarely do I say that though. I do say give me some pop corn.

Judging by how you talk you are probably from north Jersey, New York City, Connecticut or Rhode Island. Chances are, if you are from New York City (and not those other places) people would probably be able to tell if they actually heard you speak.

I'm weird. I'm a native Californian that moved to Texas as a kid (look at my user name). I never really embraced the Texas accent but because I've been around so many Texas people, it's influenced me. Throw in that I'm black and spoke some slang growing up but now have grown past it and speak proper English and I have a perfectly unique accent and pattern of speech.
