Last year it wasnt, 2 years ago it wasnt, maybe that one game 6 against the Spurs was....I guess the reason but thats about it.
Regular season offensive ratings: 2016- 109.26 2017- 115.7 2018- 115.45 2019- 116.45 Playoff offensive ratings: 2016- 92.7 2017- 110.7 2018- 109.6 2019- 110.9
Every team's offensive rating drops in the playoffs. Specifically when playing teams like Warriors, Jazz and the Spurs. I'd to see what other teams's offenses were able to do against them. Just putting out offensive rating isnt informative for the playoffs, especially when you need to context to explain them.
Oh yea? Can you name a less talented team than us who posted better offensive ratings against these teams? Or did you forget that even last year, we posted a better offensive rating agains the Jazz than the Raptors did agains the Bucks or the Sixers?
Wait so you want me to find a less talented team that posted a better ortg? What exactly is that gonna prove? The rockets only posted the 6th best ortg in the playoffs last year after being 2nd in the regular season
If there were a less talented team that were able to beat our offense in efficiency, it would show our style wasnt maximizing our efficiency, would it not? That is the not the right way to evaluate playoff offensive rating.
The point is they go from an elite offense to an average offense. Their formula doesn't work in the playoffs.
Everyone turns worse than they are against great defenses. Its also so match up based that I dont even know how you can say that. Edit: You know what....even I agree our system can be more robust, and there are times when it fails us. If they are gonna fire Dantoni or say the system doenst work, but more often than not, its our defense that kills us in the playoffs not our offense.
No everyone does not play worse offensively. There is no rule that good defense beats good offense. Also our defense has held up very well in the playoffs last two years
I have give you stats from last year showing just that man Last year defense was literally the reason we lost to GS. The year before that we had a top 5 defense so of course it would hold up.
I haven't seen you post any stats. The rockets actually held the the warriors below their regular season offense but the rockets offense dropped off by more
Jazz(top 2 defensive team last year) held us below our regular season offensive rating it was around 108 on nba.com. The Bucks against the Raptors had an offensive rating of 106. The Raptors against the Bucks...107. The Raptors against the Sixers 107. Sixers against the Raptors 103. Portland Vs GS in the WCF last year 105. Us vs GS 112. So there....get what I mean, everybody drops vs great defenses. Yea in that particular series our offense could have been better honestly but to be honest as on overall for the playoffs that year, Id say our offense was very potent.
The warriors ended up with a 115 ortg even with the loss of Durant. Denver was at 114. Bucks ended up at 111 for the playoffs. Bucks and raptors played worse offensively in the playoffs but not to the extent the rockets did, losing 5 points in ortg. I think it's an issue. Slow pace and relying on free throws and step back 3s won't work well in the playoffs. Harden is shooting like 30% most playoffs in recent years (last year 35%)
Okay? Is that surprising? Thats always been the case. They still have Curry Thompson and Green. But they played weak defensive teams, pretty much the whole playoff until the finals. Want to know what their offensive rating was against the Raptors? 109. But still quite a drop off for them huh. They did have injures there but still you get my point. Denver lost to Portland who got swept by GS Bucks played the Pistons, the Celtics(the dysfunctional Celtics) and then the Raptors where you obviously know what happend there. Both the Bucks and the Raptors literally posted worse offensive ratings than us against each other(and the Sixers) who were both great defensive teams, what does it matter how much we drop off? That pace was the big reason we were able to disrupt GS and take them out of their offense, that and our tremendous switching defense. Well Harden just has to be able to shoot better, thats it.
My point was that it was our offense that was failing in the playoffs, not defense. So we need to try something other than walk it up and take a step back 3 or do the one pass offense.
And my point is that relative to everyone else(which is what really matters here), offense is definitely not the problem. Right now? Probably, id like to see some damn adjustments right now. I still think its dumb for people to call for Mike's head but we'll see what happens as the season goes along...if he doesnt do anything ....he may deserve to get fired.
I don't know of it's a either or situation with offense and defense. We somehow morphed into this iso style in 2018 strictly to shut down the warriors so they are forced to iso with us. The margin of error is really small on this type of play because essentially you are wearing both teams down and you kind of drag them down to their level but we are slightly better with isos. It was working according to plan until we straight up couldn't stop Curry Green PnR and Paul couldnt produce enough baskets. So it's really lacking in both.
