Yeah, post New Jack City, pre-Malcolm X, I dare say Snipes and Mr. Washington were probably head-to-head vis-a-vis black actor prestige. I think Washington, at the time, had more concentrated appeal with women, whereas Snipes probably had more range and bankability considering White Men Can't Jump: don't recall a solid, memorable mainstream comedy performance from Washington (unless you count his improv trash talking in the pick-up game against his son in He Got Game - "I think I'll go around again.") I was junior-high age at the time, so dude seemed larger than life and this is pretty depressing. Probably indicative, though, of other character/personality issues with Wesley. Didn't he flat out refuse to do promotion for Blade 3? Kind of a shame cuz it seemed to have a pretty decent cast of young-ish actors (Posey, Reynolds and Biel) who will probably have decent careers going forward (although Dane Cook is probably taking ALL of Ryan Reynolds' roles now). Call me trig, cuz I'm off on a tangent.
That Judge looks like Stan Van Gundy.. Btw, I remember reading an article on FHM with Jenna Jameson's interview. She said that Wesley always tries to hit on her.. and boy did he get rejected.
Washington has done some mainstream comedy movies such as "Carbon Copy" and "Heart Condition" but they failed to garner the type of attention his dramatic roles do. I loved "Carbon Copy" though. The reason why Wesley played the role so good is that he made me forget that he was an actor. I mean I really thought he was Nino Brown in that movie. That is when I consider it a great performance, when an actor does such a good job that you forget that they are doing the job of acting such as Hanks in "Forrest Gump" and Washington in "Malcolm X."
Yeah, that was why I added the qualifiers "solid and memorable." I've seen Carbon Copy, Denzel looked like he must have been a teenager back then, or at least young enough to play George Segal's kid. That pick-up basketball scene was priceless, though, some of us athletically challenged brothers know exactly what that feels like.
Ryan is better, but the predictable junk he's done simply requires comic timing, which Cook already has; and acting coaches can probably give Cook the necessary skills to interact during the brief dramatic plot points. The "Tourgasm" series on HBO, and his hyper-conventional special material literally wiped out all sincere consideration I had for Cook as a potentially great comedian, a little less self-deprecating and cynical than I would like comics to be, and you got the sense he handpicked those tools on his tour so as not to overshadow him. If only Mitch Hedberg were still alive, or Brian Regan were a bit younger, or Jim Gaffigan and Patton Oswalt were less doughey and pasty-looking, maybe all this hype and notoriety would be channeled to someone more deserving.
I get the feeling this still won't stop that stupid "There is no Law saying you have to pay Income Taxes" email from being forwarded to me.
Ridiculous. Three years for trying to keep more of the money that he earned. The wrong party is going behind bars in this case.
Unbelievable, I guess the government forgot how much work Snipes did for them in Passenger 57 and Murder at 1600.
I remember reading somewhere recently a direct quote from an IRS representative that one of the main reasons for going after Snipes and pushing for as harsh a sentence as possible was simply for the publicity it would give in scaring the masses from trying to cheat on their taxes. And to that I must say this is what I think >>>>>
