I only got pops once and it was Sharpstown Middle around '86-'87. I was thinking that I couldn't imagine getting paddled in elementary and I couldn't think of anyone that was ever physically disciplined that I knew of in elementary. But then I remember that my first grade teacher would be really hard on just one girl. She had a ruler that she would spank the girl with. I couldn't remember if that girl was just really bad or what. The thing that I do remember is that the little girl was the only black kid in the class. The teacher was black, so it wasn't a racial thing, but that's about the only thing that I remember about the girl. Anyway, one time, the girl pissed off the teacher and the teacher didn't even take the time to grab the ruler, but just started spanking the girl with the yard stick that she was using for the lesson. She ended up breaking the yard stick over the poor girl. The girl was wearing a skirt and the teacher was purposely hitting the girl on her bare leg. Back then, I didn't know what to think other than that I shouldn't piss off my teacher. Now when I think about it, I think that teacher should have spent a little time in jail. She taped the broken yard stick back together and left it at the front of the class as kind of a reminder not to mess with her.
Yeah I don't think that would go over too well today. I bet that little girl didn't act up again, though.
I would've smashed her teeth out and made a necklace out of them to remind to teachers not to abuse a child like that.
Our 5th grade teacher had this wooden ruler with a metal insert sandwiched in the middle, and she would pop us "up side the head" with the side of the ruler. Ouch. These days that would get her picture on the front page ...ah, but those were the good old days! D R
I was twice, once in second grade (one pop) which watered my eyes but not a tear was spilt and another time in Jr. High although I don't remember the grade, I think I got three pops that time. It was better than SAC (in school suspension) or detention.
My favorite teacher in elementary school got fired for smacking a smartass kid (6th grade). This was in 1998. I was never paddled myself, I think they were banned by the time I started school.
I most certainly received licks during both junior high and high school. They never hurt. What was much worse (although still not that bad) was the anticipation leading up to the lick and then the subsequent humiliation of having to bend over. Then came the very difficult task of attempting to show pain/guilt/remorse after your punishment was a total joke. Suppressing the laughter was at times challenging.
LOL. B-Bob IMHO you are cosistently the best poster on this BBS. I got "Swats" in 1978 by an assistant principal. I brought some Electric football teams to school. We were playing a game on our desks, when when frigid Mrs. James saw what we were doing and flipped out. She sent us to the office for "swats". It was humilating. It was all a part of growing up. Kids nowadays are so spoiled. Hell, I want to "swat" a lot of the punks I see these days.
like meggo, i started school in Fall '87. i thought paddling was an ancient practice or something. my parents would tell me about it happening to them but i figured it was long gone by the time i started. from this thread and Fatty's comments, it looks like 87 was the demarcation b/t paddling and no paddling. lucky me i guess. of course i never did anything that would've got me swatted. although to hear some of you talk you couldn't say boo without getting swatted. i agree spanking or paddling isn't always abuse and can be effective (i got spanked by my dad seems about two or three times a year back in the day and i stopped whatever i was doing) but it sounds like y'all had just plain assholes for teachers who got off on it. that's just wrong and should've been stopped. for my part, i couldn't imagine the practice happening at school. it would've been crazy to think you could just get paddled at any given time. it obviously wasn't "excellerated" english?
Just out of curiosity VooDoo, who were you paddled by at Sugar Land Middle School? I went to SLMS (formerly known as Sugar Land Junior High) from '96 to '99 and I remember Coach Dinkins having a paddle hanging in his office for decoration...I would have hated to get paddled by Dinkins...that guy was huge... ...Oh, and also, what are some of the teachers you had at SLMS back then? I know that a lot of teachers that still work there have been teaching at SLMS since it opened in '75...
Actually, you got popped for anything that would lead to detention. If you've had detention, that was what came after pops. When I was in school, they normally gave the choice. An hour in a dank school room or 3 pops (they could only give 3) that lasted less than 30 seconds? It was always an easy decision for me...
I just remembered the rumor in school about corporal punishment in the principal's office. We had to stick out our hand and get hit with a ruler or yardstick or something...and the rumor was that if you put a hair on your hand, it would draw blood, and then you could sue. The things kids say
I think Dinkins got me, the name sounds familiar and I know I got pops in gym. I don't remember many of teachers names from Jr. High it was so long ago. I know the asst. principal also got me a couple times.
Aldine District from Elementary through HS. How else do people remember the vice principals names. Elementary - Rose (she used a ruler. Those suck) - actually she was the principal. Middle - Royster (He was pretty tough) HS - Smith (He was actually a nice guy that hated to do it) I don't have a problem with it if it's a wack on the butt, but not with a paddle with holes and I don't think teachers should do it. It's too much of a distraction. I had this crush on Ms Mesa in the 3rd grade, until she gave me swats outside the class, then I hated the b!tch.
I was paddled 11 different times in 2nd grade, @ Deepwater Elementary I can't remember what for mostly, although once it was for doing cartwheels in class when the teacher left the room (Everyone was doing it but I got caught) I also got caught stealing other kids lunch money and buying pencils from a machine in the library that year... didn't do anything to me for that
