Oh no he wasn't at all. There was drama like you wouldn't believe the years between Sampson leaving and the championship years. If all that happened in the Twitter era Hakeem would have been depicted much differently than he is today, but it doesn't mean he wasn't one of the best 3 bigs of all time and that didn't do more for Houston sports than any other player in the history of sports in Houston.

Game to game Hakeem produced at a high level but fans question players all the time when their player goes that many years without winning a title, has a reputation of being a selfish black hole on offense, and tries to force a trade much like other stars have done nowadays like Dwight and Melo.

The lesson to be learned here is fans will probably look back at the Harden Howard days years later and say damn we had it better than we thought we did at the time.... There is no doubt about that at all.

This is definitely one of the better products Les and Rockets owners of the past have put on the floor, and the good news is, there is a decent window of time and much improvement the roster can have coming it's way. This should be a much more exciting time to be a Rockets fan than it seems when coming and reading the GARM.

Only time I was mad was when Patterson tried to trade Olajuwon to GS Warriors. Oh, and the time the Jazz clock keeper forgot to start the clock.

He and Sampson took the team to the finals in 86.
Since he went to u of h, he was was already a hero coming to the team.

Yeah but the late 80's and early 90's were very painful as Rockets fans. Could you imagine if this BBS was around in 1990 and what people would be writing? People would be dogging on Akeem.

I always loved his game. But I remember how a lot of people undervalued him and the frustrations of losing.

I remembered being frustrated at the ugly ball in the early 90s. It was awesome when we won our championships (I was in high school) but before the span of those 3 years or so, the Rockets were really up and down and we had no help for Hakeem. And the pacing was a lot of start and stop. You can talk about Otis Thorpe and Carl Herrera and Mad Max and all those guys, but we didn't really start making noise until we got Cassel and Horry and Cassel in particular allowed our bench to hang with the opposing teams when Hakeem had to take a breather.

I remember being frustrated whenever we played the Sonics - George Karl always had our number, or the Jazz.. they always out flopped and out-pick and rolled us. So yeah, hindsight is all fuzzy and warm -- but I remember Rockets fans always knew our games were never a sure thing, and these simplistic bait threads are lame.

    +1

I think the surrounding cast would have drawn the most criticism during the period you outline.

I remember it being very frustrating watching Hakeem (Akeem in those days) be so dominant, yet as team, accomplish little.

The manor in which tinman keeps sucking the Dream's D is disturbing. We get it. He's the greatest C of all time, it's common knowledge. You on the other hand don't seem to understand it wasn't all T-Mac's fault we had no success in the 2000s.
