We all should be excited about the accomplishment and about making history. I'm not trying to put down the team at all. I'm just anticipating what the reaction is going to be around the country when the Rockets eventually hit that rough stretch. I felt, since Yao went down, that if we get past the first round it would be an unbelievable accomplishment for this bunch. And yet, because of this streak I think the media around the country won't see it that way any more. Now, all of a sudden we'll be a bust if we don't get really far in the playoffs. That's what I'm anticipating, and I just think it's unfair.
So as a team we actually didn't achieve 21 games in a row? I'm sorry but 12 games with Yao or without him, 9 games won without him it doesn't really matter, Yao or McGrady didn't won those games, Houston Rockets did.
Right. Patriots winning 18 in a row until the last drive of the season was remarkable. The point of this thread - Patriots as an example, regular season only - If the Patriots won 12 in a row, then Tom Brady got injured and was out the rest of the season and replaced with Vinnie Testaverde or Matt Cassel, would everything still have sky high Super Bowl expectations for them? Even if Brady-less Patriots were to win the next 4 games? Some would still stay heck yeah they made history, others would say they're not doing crap without Tom Brady. Some would even forget about Tom Brady and just say "16-0 Patriots" and pile on them for not advancing.
Thats the key part of it. Its ENTIRELY about the POSTSEASON and nothing to do with the "now". All its doing is looking at the roster without Yao or possibly Landry going against a formidable opponent in the playoffs were everything is 0-0. I do mostly agree with everything mentioned actually...but thats why postseason is called the 2nd season, cuz we can worry about that season when it comes, and deal with the season we're currently in (as fans that is). Was gonna big time defend this post, but there's little things that paper and stat sheets dont pick up on, like guzzling down a couple brews after a butt kicking Rockets performance. Or being able to talk "hella" noise to people here in Laker Land where I live...The cliche high-5's to your "bros" while watching them win another one...Not gonna take that away to temper my expectations and forecast realistically Rockets chances of matching postseason success to their historic streak. For today screw the realism - in the time being give me fantasy Like you mentioned in the greatest shot blocker thread, about what all did Manut Bol have to do in his given playing time to make a case for himself. Same for the Rockets, what all do the Rockets have to do to make their case?
Durvasa is right on many levels, but at the same time, you can't devalue whats at the heart of why the team is winning. They believe they can. I'm not a JVG hater, but this is the very additude that he would have philosiphized the team in to adopting after Yao went down. They would have said and done all the right things, but they wouldn't have had the core belief that their system would have held true and they could have continued their streak. Let's enjoy it, the team is playing incredible. The crowds at the Toyota Center have been amazing. The team believes in their system.
My only concern is McGrady was playing for approximately 48 mins against teams like Hawks and Bobcats....and the same way Yao was playing heavy minutes before he was injuried. We need to rest our stars.......
Where does this notion of resting our stars from? Have you looked at the standings? One blip in your schedule and you are looking at a 6th or 7th seed. There is a reason why Manu Ginobili is STARTING for the Spurs right now, even though Parker is back and healthy.
ok, i wasn't seein it like that, i see ur point from that perspective. Sorry if i came off as disrespectful, just dont want anybody killin the mood.
Don't worry about the media. They have never, don't, nor will ever care about any of the teams in this city. Short of MJ coming out of retirement to play for us and leading the Rockets to an 82-0 season on a broken leg, with the flu, etc., you aren't going to get much positive reaction from the national media when it comes to this city. It has always been this way as far back as I can remember. The pleasure comes when one of our teams comes through once in awhile and puts the media on their collective ASSES. Then we all flip the rest of the country the middle finger. Just sit back and enjoy the ride.
You're right we're not a 20-0 team. We'll be on a 24-0 run once we're done with the "rough" stretch. Go Rokkits!
Well put. (to durvasa) your point is somewhat valid but the thread is a little unnecessary. First off, almost no one in the media feels that the rockets are now a championship caliber team even after winning 20 games in a row, in fact there is a lot of scrutiny because most analyst feel that the rockets probably don't deserve to be in the same class as the past Lakers or the past Bucks. But isn't that the beauty of sports? Isn't that why fans love cheering for the underdogs; to see a team accomplish feats that no one expects them to accomplish (especially if it's your own team). I'm in no way trying to disrespect you because I agree that the Rockets aren't the favorite to win the championship (though they are are a 20-0 team because it's what they achieved) but I'm not going to say to other fans, " guys, it's great what were doing but come on guys...you seriously don't think we can go anywhere in the playoffs." Because what do you say if they get past the first round or go further? And again, what you feel is what you feel, but seriously enjoy the moment because the beauty of it is that most people would have never expected the rockets to do what they are doing, which makes the streak even more incredible.
