Whoa, Ainsworth AND Moss? Those are 2 pretty big talents, can't blame Gerry for not beating that offer. Still, Freddy freaking Sanchez.... 1 hour or so to go. Us, the Cards, the Braves, and the Phillies are still in the hunt. No clue who might be out there- Weaver? Vazquez? Garcia? Hernandez?
I think you're right, I was thinking 4 central. Usually, a lot of trades float in in the couple hours after the deadline.
Thanks for the updates guys. It's weird going to the Rockets site to get more updated information on trades than I can get on espn.com.
July 31, 2003, 3:30PM Astros' hopes to grab Suppan or Ponson dashed By JOSE DE JESUS ORTIZ Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle ATLANTA -- Gerry Hunsicker's hopes of acquiring Jeff Suppan from the Pirates or Sidney Ponson from the Orioles were dashed today at 3 p.m. as the non-waiver trading deadline elapsed without the Astros making a deal. Suppan was traded to Boston. Ponson went to the San Francisco Giants. "Only two pitchers we were interested in changed uniforms," said Hunsicker, who admitted Ponson and Suppan were the two pitchers he tried to acquire. "Several others were not (traded). This is as much a matter of opportunity and being able to match up with a team. "We'll move forward with our team. In some ways not making a trade is a show of support for the guys that make up our team." The Orioles were trying to raid the Astros' farm system for Ponson, and Hunsicker didn't bite. According to one National League official, Baltimore sought Morgan Ensberg, top Class AAA New Orleans outfield prospect Jason Lane and another top prospect for Ponson. Suppan would have bolstered the Astros' rotation, especially after Roy Oswalt suffered his third right groin strain Tuesday night. But Suppan barely qualified in the "make-a-difference" category Hunsicker sought. "Basically the two pitchers we were interested that moved, we weren't able to match up with," said Hunsicker, who also had talks with Montreal about ace righthander Javier Vazquez, who wasn't traded. The Astros can still make a deal for another pitcher, but that player must clear waivers. "The trading deadline is probably more exciting for the talk show hosts and the newspaper columnists and the TV analysts than it is for baseball people," Hunsicker said. "In some ways it's an artificial timeline in my opinion. You work hard all winter to put a team together. If you work hard all season and stay away from serious injuries, you don't feel like you're in a position to have to make a move. ... "We've obviously been hit with an injury to one of our star pitchers in Oswalt. That's certainly going to hurt. It's unrealistic to believe you can replace a guy like that. There were only a few pitchers you could say were in that category."
Giants got ripped off by the O's. I don't think Ponson is that big of an upgrade over Moss. Ainsworth will be a stud in 2 years time.
Depends on how Ponson does in the NL, and where he pitches next year. Time will tell. It was a very steep price to pay, though. Great trade for the O's.
we still have the whole rest of August for.. Astros to try to make a deal or For the Cards to make one too this deadline doesnt mean that we wont be making any moves.. guys just gotta clear waviers now..
I say leave the team the way it is and bring up a young gun from the farm. On a side note, hopefully we can see Jason Lane in action this year.
That's not necessarily bad. A National league team gets weaker. (Good for the Stros). The Yankees division get a little competition. Making it easier for George to fail.
So the Orioles wanted Morgan AND Jason Lane AND another "top prospect"? Geez I was pissed when the deadline passed with no trade, now I'm pretty glad nothing happened. All that for a guy who will (if memory serves) be a free agent who's already turned down a $5 mill per year deal with the O's is awful steep.
