Giles only goes in a package with Kendall. No way we take on those 2 salaries combined. Though i've always been a huge Giles fan.
Rocketman95... i made a mistake when reading the article. Trading Ensberg as part of a package isn't too bad but i don't think the astros are serious contenders for the world series. Basically Ponson would walk after this year and Ensberg would still be making 300,000 dollars for the next few years. I wouln't trade for Ponson unless we give him an extension.
Hildalgo's making 8.5 million this year. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?statsId=5896 I'd trade Blum for a pitcher, but no way would I trade Ensberg. I don't like the idea of trading Hildalgo, but I'd deal with it a lot easier than I would with dealing Ensberg.
Hidalgo makes more next year. You have to take into account his team buyout for 2005, i think that's what puts him around 12 million.
That's the problem. He's already been put on the DL, and reports say there's a very good chance he's gonna be shut down for the season. Rm95- Interesting. Mora used to be one of our minor leaguers. IIRC, the guy can be put at any position except 1st, catcher, or pitcher. Utility players with his kind of hitting are nice to have. I'd trade Redding as part of a deal for Vazquez, but not for any of the other names thrown out there. If you want to really get gutsy, throw Giles and Kendall into the talks for Suppan. At that point, it's probably Ensberg, Hidalgo, Buck, Ausmus (to finish the year), and Saarloos or Rosario, for Giles, Kendall, Suppan, a prospect, and throw in Jose Hernandez to platoon with Blum for us for the rest of the year. If the Cubs can get a starting CF and a 25 year old run producing 3B, why not? Eh, just trade deadline speculation, carry on.
Jason Kendall is a bad idea. I wouldn't mind trading Bagwell and Saarloos for Giles and Suppan. This way, Giles can play left and Berkman can move over to 1st base. Suppan takes Oswalt's place in the rotation.
Kendall's contract is ridiculous. No way we take it. Especially when we have Buck waiting to take over for Ausmus.
Trade and Bagwell in the same sentence? Come on man, that's blasphemy. I'd like to see him remain an Astro his whole career.
So would I, but it's time to win a playoff series. Having Giles out there would help tremendously not only with his bat, but in LF too. McLane loves Jeff, so obviously he's untradeable. I was just throwing the idea out there.
Buck broke his hand (I believe) a few weeks ago. He's done for the season, and it may also mean he'll need another year of minor league ball. Besides, some say he's not even the best catching prospect we have- Hector Gimenez is. Other than that, how many teams have made the playoffs with a rookie starting catcher? Our staff is too young to go with a rookie catcher, IMO.
That's why we'll sign Ausmus for another year. But Kendall gets 8.5 million a year and so does Giles. Pittsburgh only want to package them, so i guarantee Drayton isn't going to take on 17 million dollars for positions we're already set at.
Well if we got him, when we inevitably play Atlanta someone with a bat will be playing for (family) pride. As Astros fans (therefore Biggio/Bagwell fans), I'm not sure we have any leeway to talk about playoff success.
Well, if you want to make it even more far fetched, have Kendall demand a trade (as a player traded in the middle of a multi-year deal). Then, either trade him, or he becomes a free agent. There's your 8.5 mill back. (Yes, I do know players don't randomly demand trades from playoff teams with around 30 mill left on their deal).
Does anyone know if this is Giles last year on his contract? If Giles has a few more years left on his contract maybe the Astros can trade Hidalgo, Ensberg, and some minor league prospect for Giles and Suppan. The Astros could then play Berkman in RF.
Here is a little tidbit from ESPN insider on Suppan... Jul. 31 - ESPN.com's Jayson Stark is hearing the Pirates are asking teams interested in Suppan to also take Reggie Sanders or Jeff D'Amico, much the way they made taking Jason Kendall a condition on any deal for Brian Giles. It's unclear how that will sit with the Astros, who according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review have jumped firmly into the chase for Suppan. The Phillies also have made an offer for Suppan, but reports indicate they're not willing to part with the type of prospects the Pirates are expecting in return. A number of other teams also are in the mix, according to various reports, including the Cardinals, Braves, Giants, Red Sox and White Sox. Looks like they are trying to package Suppan off with other players.
