MemphisX is alright. And I like having fans of rival teams around here if they're cool. And MemphisX is. He SHOULD talk smack for his team. They're exceeding expectations better than we are. Who picked Memphis to pass Dallas? Who even picked them to pass us? They weren't even supposed to be in the race. He should talk smack. Anyway, Memphis isn't a blood rival. I like em fine. Let's play better than them before we blow them off. Keep talking, MemphisX. Gives us something to shoot for.

I think he means the Blazers when they had Rasheed, Wells, Stoudamire, Grant, and so on.

we were just discussing their ascent over us last night and how stunning it looks to an outsider....consider this: Memphis v San Antonio or Rockets v Minnesota...where do you think the likely upset would be in the first round?

Memphis has one thing going for them: Jerry West and a very nice bench squad...the problem with this is that you cannot keep a bench together and you better improve your A-team to keep ascending next year....I am not to sure Memphis has curb appeal to draw the top talent in the league, though Jerry may be the draw.

How long will Mike Miller be content off the bench?
How long will Posey continue to play above his head?
Who are their starters besides Gasol?

These and many more are questions to be answered.....

Memphis may have hit a roll and played themselves into the 5th seed, but say hello to SA in the first round........Good Luck

Memphis isn't a title contender right now, and I can't say I'm a fan...but with the talent they have accumulated, it's not unreasonable for them to be able to trade off a few pieces to get a real stud.

Before I get scared prematurely, who is available that Jerry West could get to turn the Grizzlies into a force?

Starting with post players...

Yao - Not Available
Tim Duncan - N/A
Kevin Garnett - N/A, but if the Wolves continue to crash and burn out of the playoffs this year and next, the Wolves will get tired of paying for lots of stars and KG will be moved to a big market team. Not Memphis, I'm guessing. (I could be wrong:p )
Shaq - I don't know if Shaq would ever consent to leaving the lakers. I doubt he would.
Zach Randolph, Amare Stoudemire - I don't know if these guys are the superstars of the future, but they might be available for the right deal.
Chris Bosh - N/A
Jermaine O'Neal - N/A

Guards
Kobe Bryant - Available for sign and trade.
Tracy McGrady - Available

These two guards are the only players who could possibly take a team without a dominant post presence to the promised land. Interestingly enough, Memphis has enough talent that they might be the right team to surround such a guard.

Well, MemphisX? Am I missing anybody? Who do you want or think that you could get?

Memphis is playing solid ball right now. This should not be attitude of your team. You guys should be hoping for a first round win, which would not even really be an upset. If u guys lose in the first round and so do we, how is your team better than us? As good as you guys are playing, playoffs cant be enough. I actually believe Memphis can beat a few playoff teams this year. Why not?

That being said, you know that as long as the Rocks have Yao, we have the bigger future. We will 'be big' soon! ;)

It is really simple! Memphis is not that good. They will do nothing in the playoffs and will be out of the playoffs again next year. Don't get used to the playoffs!

With apologies to Ogden Nash:

Did the Pyramid Kid
View this plot of rot
As the vault of fault
Or grave of the save?
Verily, it's the Tomb of Doom -- but for whom?

It seems like there is an over-achieving team every year, and this year it is Memphis. I really don't see Memphis winning a play0ff series. Playoff is all about half court and physical game. Memphis's style is not well suited for the playoffs. Their post game and half-court defense are soft. Their 10-men rotation is actually quite a disadvantage in a playoff series.

I really am happy for the Grizzlies and for MemphisX. The guy has been patient with a losing team for quite some time and its finally coming around for him.

Though the Grizz have a better record than the rocks, each team is built on different principles. The Rockets are a hard-nosed defensive team with a dominant inside presense and a primarily half-court offense. They also have a dominant top 3 fg% player as a go-to guy in Yao Ming.

The Grizz have a crazy style running 10 players for less minutes and focused more on breaks and outhustling.

The only problem is that in the playoffs when teams slow down and understand the others offense more, fast breaks are limited and it becomes a more defensive, half court game that is what the Rockets play.

That is a main reason that I feel Houston's style can help them to go beyond just MAKING the playoffs is their style. I think that Memphis, unless they add that extra piece will be another Dallas, or like Golden State in the Run TMC time.

The last few champions have been defensive monsters:
SA
LA
Chi
Hou
Det

A few tidbits about the Grizzlies:

The Grizzlies are a defensive team. However, we don't have the luxury of a 7'6" center and a 7'0 PF so we are a different type of defensive team. Curiously enough we lead the league in block shots and steals. Our defense is predicated on mucho ball pressure and playing passing lanes.

I keep seeing posts about how our 10 man rotation won't hold up in the playoffs. How does anyone know, it has not been done before this season. People said it would not hold up over a season but I actually think it has gotten better. What will hurt us in the playoffs is our lack of defensive rebounding. We have a tendency to give up 2nd shots and vs the top of the West that is killer.

I still have dreams of Kobe in a Grizzly uniform but I think it will remain a dream. I think the 'super star' the Grizzlies will acquire probably will be under valued when the Grizzlies get him. Probale canidates are: Eddy Curry, Allen Iverson, Steve Francis , Kenyon Martin, Paul Pierce, Jamal Mashburn, Joe Johnson, or Shawn Marion. You never know who will become available in the summer. We won't get any of the 4 franchise changers (Duncan, Shaq, KG, Yao) so we will keep plugging along. My top 5 in order of preference: 1. Kobe, T Mac, Eddy Curry, Kenyon Martin, and Steve Francis via trade or 1. Kosta Perovic , 2. Martynas Andriuskevicius , 3. Andre Iguodala , 4. Pavel Podkolzine , or 5. Josh Smith/Dwight Howard.

Good luck after tonight!
