lmao - good question. Good call, sub, on Mr. Bungle - I have their self-titled album and it is very bizarre. 2 more Ligeti CDs came in the mail yesterday and one of them has "Aventures" on it. THAT piece has replaced his "Requiem" for supreme weirdness. It is just 3 people (2 of them being women) hissing, giggling, singing real loud, and then singing soft and doing this for like 12 minutes!
I love "weirdo music" but I like to call it advanced listening. I like that it challenges the listener to rid themselves of what is considered normal. I especially love the free jazz movement of the late 60s. after awhile it starts to make sense and becomes really beautiful. some of my favorites. I also feel like these artist like most who are pioneers were just ahead of their and the general public has to catch up to what they are doing. Remember Hendrix was considered "weird" at first and had to go to Europe to become accepted. these four I think are the true godfathers of "punk" and are my favorites they went against the grain in true punk rock fashion, except unlike punk these guys could actually play their intruments Albert Ayler - the unsung hero of free music Sun Ra - the "missing link" one day people will realize how truely important this man and his enormous catalog is Ornette Coleman - gets the credit for the first "free" music but really the first two that I mentioned really opened things up John Coltrane - was really famous and went free after hearing the music of the others other weirdos that I like Art Ensemble of Chicago Pharoah Sanders Cecil Taylor Chalie Haden Roswell Rudd Sonny Murray Don Cherry Esquivel! Edgard Varese Ennio Morricone newer weirdos John Zorn Die Like a Dog Trio/Quartet Willam Parker Hamid Drake Matthew Ship Mr. Bungle /Mike Patton
its taken from one of his album covers. this same person also appears on about half of his album covers. whether or not this person is actually Jandek is debatable. Polyphonic Spree really aren't all that weird...sure they are a spectacle to see in the white robes but the music is pretty much Saturday morning kids' music singalong.
Weird is a pretty relative term to use. To me, Polyphonic Spree is weird. They are very different from every other band I have listened to. Particularly the lyrics of some of the songs. I still can't figure out what the hell "Soldier Girl" is talking about.
I am bringing this thread back to life as I have "re-discovered" Talk Talk, specifically their last 2 albums, "Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock". If you are expecting another "It's My Life" on these 2 albums, you will be sadly disappointed, lol. The best way I can describe these 2 albums are Kid A from Radiohead and a lot of the Sigur Ros stuff, but even then that wouldn't do them much justice. Also, I have to give some love to Can - maybe the greatest krautrock band of all-time and along with Brian Eno, a MAJOR influence on all ambient music (like Talk Talk).
The Residents. I don't personally like them, but a friend listened to them in college. I found that it disturbed me greatly, to the point I'd always ask him to turn it off. Weird and strange stuff.
Yeah I have to admit I was obsessed with Jedi Mind Tricks a couple years back. "Murders by stickin a crucifix through ya cervix"
its probably pretty accurate to say the mystery surrounding him was much greater 3 years ago than it is today, seeing as he's now given a live performance and all...
hehe...move on from trance to minimal and electro house. zydeco Suicidal Tendencies Aquabats (Thanks Yo Gabba Gabba )
I get bored with music from time to time and need something different to stimulate my mind. For this reason I will listen to bizarre music that most people don’t like or don’t understand. Airto Moreira’s “Other Side of This” is a cd that most people think is weird. Aphex Twin, which Manny brought up, is another. Aphex Twin’s Windowlicker is a piece of music that most people think is creepy, but I can’t get enough of. There is a lot of New Age and Electronic music that is so far from the mainstream Pop, Rock, and Country, that majority listeners would think is weird. What’s weird to me is how someone could listen to various versions of the same song over, and over, and over. Groups like Creed, Linkin Park, and Nickelback play various versions of the same song. Don’t people get bored out of their minds listening to the same thing every day?
Jandek is a mysterious figure, but I believe he performs at SXSW every couple of years. If you search on the internet, you can find his address, and go knock on his door. He lives in Houston.
The closest I listen to weirdo music is math rock like Battles and The Foals. Then there is freak folk like Devendra Barnhardt, and Animal Collective, but I really don't listen to them all that often.
