Weirdest thing I have ever eaten is a philipino snack called Belute (sp?), it's basically a 1/2 developed chicken egg. There is actually a fetus inside that you can pull out and see, I personally didn't go that far to pull it out but I did eat it. Supposedly the juice and the head is the best part of it, the beak is crunchy which I found quite disturbing. I'll try almost any type of food that's edible. You only live once so I personally would like to try all the different foods of the world, try what people around the world are eating.
Balut - it's a duck egg. I've seen it on TV (Cook's Tour iirc). Looked unbelievably nasty, don't think I could handle that. Funny, Pole, uni's the only sushi I can't stand.
Speaking of Cook's tour, I've read a couple of Anthony Bourdain's books (that one, and Kitchen Confidential), and for anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant, I'd definitely recommend them.
That's it, I saw it on Taboo: Foods, which is probably the last show you should get eating tips from. It was very good but it wasn't really all that nasty either, didn't have that much taste IMO.
I smear peanut butter on my waffles and pancakes. Everybody thinks it's gross, yet nobody has ever tried it before...
I think it was called Kaldi, but the cafe that was where Shade is now in the Heights used to have "Elvis Waffles" on their menu. They were waffles covered in peanut butter with sliced bananas on top. It used to be my wife's favorite.
- fried ants - scorpion - alligator, turtle, other various inbetween fish/turtle dishes - raw whale - cobra blood, mixed in with a strong liquor
that's not too bad. I love "funky-ass sushi" i think ur talkin about amaebi right there buffalo burgers, taste like beef.
squirrell...off the street. my uncle, who passed away, 3 years ago, was an avid roadkill eater. every once in awhile he'd stop in the middle of the road to pick up his dinner. i can't believe i let him sucker me into tasting it. not bad.
Yummy.....ate there after the St. Patty's day parade. As for Cobra blood in strong liquor......never had it. But I am staring at a cobra right now (or is he staring at me). A good friend of mine went to Vietnam recently and brought me back this cobra bottled in some sort of liquor from the Binh Tay Distillery. Haven't brought myself to drink any of it yet.
In the case of the sherbert and tuna.....LOTS of mar1juana! I eat the peanut butter and cottage cheese fairly often before bed....it's good for you.
Hell ya, peanut butter and syrup on waffles is the best. It's probably because the only time I eat it is when I'm wasted at 4am.
"authentic Chinese/Malaysian restaurant"? LOL, isn't that an oxymoron? The pork intestine used in the Chinese dish is large intestine which requires some extra cleaning to make it free of any unpleasant flavor. Not every Chinese would eat it though. Yet, one of most notorious stuff is pork kidney. Even a veteran chef can sometime not be able to make it super clearn. But if you like the tenderness of kidney you probably wouldn't mind the slight odor. Squid on the other hand is a very common menu item, in fact it's on my dinner list for tonight. So in that sense, I don't think your Chinese co-worker was trying to give you a hard time. Be aware all of these have very high cholesterol content.
