Three things: -- The ugliness of infidelity aside, am I the only one that thought those letters were actually quite beautiful to read? Instead of the sexually overt parlance you typically expect in situations like this, all we get is a bunch of old-fashioned romantic love letters. -- If he actually did use state property to send these letters, then they should be fair game. Otherwise, they should not have been published -- that is an unfair invasion of privacy. -- It still boggles my mind how human beings can be so stupid as to lose all sense of reality because they've fallen into an emotional state of love with someone else, to the point of throwing their entire lives and careers to the wind just because you have to be with that other person RIGHT NOW. Infatuation is one hell of a drug. (The stupidity of falling into an extra marital affair, especially as a highly visible public official, and with a person living in another country no less, is another story altogether).

I'm sure he had some kind of conscience and early on during the "emailing phase" with her, he probably thought that what he was doing wasn't right. Maybe he felt a little guilty. That's his conscience. That's the moment he has to go to his wife and tell her what he's been doing (assuming they speak to each other and that she isn't cheating on him, too). The infidelity, mentally, started way before the night he slept with her. Then, there's the stupidity.
