No, I wouldn't take that bet, but the guy has been stubbornly stupid about this entire business from the beginning. He may hang around a few more weeks. If he gives a damn about his family, which he appears conflicted about (the b*stard), he'd quit this weekend. Guess we'll see if you called it!
If he is gone this weekend, it won't be because of his feelings for his family -- he's made it very clear they are not a top concern for him. It will be because he sees the writing on the wall. With more Republicans (particularly SC R's) calling for his resignation daily, with the majority of R's in the SC State Senate even doing so now, he doesn't appear to have too much of a choice in the matter anymore.
I'm beginning to think he's doing whatever he can to convince his wife to divorce him, so he's then free to pursue the Argentine girl who seems to be the real love of his life.
If this leather-skinned, middle-aged hayseed is willing to sacrifice his Governorship for a younger, attractive, multi-lingual and still upwardly-mobile urban Argentinian, he may be in for a viciously rude awakening. Don't forget Kissinger's advice, "the ultimate aphrodisiac."
I think so too. Many people end up marrying the wrong person. If this new girl really is his real love and they have true love then that pretty much trumps anything else in his life. The guy needs to man up and just say that and go for her.
Trumps the many, many years he's had a relationship with his wife? Trumps the well-being of his four children? So he can satisfy his lust for a woman who is far enough away to seem exotic? If the prodigal governor would consider his children, his wife, and his state, in that order, instead of his nether regions, he might find the answer to his dilemma. And that's putting aside his incredible hypocrisy in making a fool of himself in this way after being elected running on a platform of "family values." What a joke.
I know a guy in North Carolina who was in almost the exact same position as Sanford except his profile wasn't as high as a governor. He left his wife and family for a lady in the Netherlands. She dumped in one year later and he was totally humiliated.
Too idealistic for my taste. I'm sure there are thousands of people he could love. Presumably, he loved his wife at one point. And, there are other things in life besides romantic love anyway. If this is his "true love", his commitment to his wife, the covenant with God he made at his wedding (since he's supposedly a Believer), his relationship with his children, his duty as a governor, and his simple self-preservation are probably all more important than his true love.
I think at this point, his mistress is also probably having second thoughts about any sort of relationship with the governor at this point. Just because he considers her a soul mate doesn't mean its reciprocated. He really sounds emotionally stricken and I think is probably romanticizing this situation more than it really is. I really don't think he's come back down to reality and when he does, man is it going to hurt. Most dudes never want to date a girl with baggage. I don't think a woman would feel any different about a guy with all the baggage this guy has. This isn't a small amount either. 4 kids, and openly going into the public about the details of his affair. Privacy invaded from e-mails he sent to her. A guy that is making an ass of himself in a humiliating fashion. Probably more pictures and details of the mistress that will surface because of this guy's moronic behavior. Last but not least a guy that claims to be in love with his "soul mate" that still feels the need to reconcile with his wife to save public face. He basically admitted he's trying to ditch her by trying to fall back in love with his wife. Shakespeare couldn't make this stuff up. What a psycho.
President Mitterand knew how to handle his women. Here, you see his wife, his daughter, and his mistress attending his funeral.

It's always great to read an insightful post in an old thread, go to rep, and discover you're the one who wrote it.
Because of the show House of Cards, Spoiler I fully expect for this guy to be found dead one day after running an organized unsuccessful campaign.
http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-gop-sanford-financial-support-20130417,0,7138887.story National GOP campaign arm withdraws Sanford's financial support Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford’s comeback try encountered severe turbulence Wednesday when the National Republican Congressional Committee withdrew its financial support less than three weeks before a special election for his former House seat. The action by the GOP’s campaign arm came one day after a damaging allegation by Sanford’s ex-wife came to light. It accused him of a pattern of trespassing at her house in violation of their 2010 divorce decree. Much of the Republican establishment has been holding Sanford at a distance, though he did receive the endorsement of House Speaker John Boehner this month after winning the GOP nomination in a runoff primary. Republicans are worried that more damaging revelations about Sanford’s personal life could emerge before the election, according to a Republican official. The official confirmed an account in Politico, which first reported the NRCC’s action and quoted a GOP operative as calling the committee’s decision to abandon Sanford “an unfortunate situation” which “happens when candidates aren’t honest and withhold information.” On Tuesday night, the Associated Press reported that the former governor has been ordered to appear in family court on May 9, two days after the election, to explain why he should not be held in contempt of court for violating his divorce agreement. Sanford’s ex-wife, Jenny, in a complaint dated Feb. 4, said she returned to her house on Sunday, Feb. 3, to find the former governor leaving through the back door, using his cellphone as a flashlight. She called it part of “a pattern of entering” her property “without her permission and against her wishes.” She also said that she had previously demanded that her ex-husband stop the visits and had filed a “No Trespass” letter with the local police department.
