It's crazy to argue against this. Even if it's just for the sake of re-trading him, you do this deal. You don't think some Eastern conference team would take him off our hands for something better than Cato and Mobley? Regardless of what you say, Webber is head and shoulders above all our PF's. He can pull down rebounds like Cato, score like MoT, and blocks almost 2 shots per game. Absolutely, I'd do it. Like I said, even if it means trading him immediately. For example, I'm sure Seattle would love to have him. We could probably have our pick of Ray or Rashard even. How about PJ Brown and Jamal Mashburn? Tyson Chandler and Antonio Davis? Webber is one of the stars in the league. He's definitely not my favourite, probably not in MY top 10. But he's in many top 10's, and MANY top 15's. The rule of trading is that the team that gets the best player involved always wins. I absolutely cannot see how anyone can argue this, especiialy if he completes the season healthy without needing surgery in the summer.
Just for arguments sake, I don't think we can turn around and trade him immediately. Seattle - Why would they trade 2 young cornerstones of their franchise? New Orleans - PJ would be a nice addition, but no way we get both for Webber. Chicago - Hell no! Chandler is whiny, injury prone and immature. I'd consider it after he played a full season, but that has yet to happen. Davis is on the decline IMO.
Getting C-Web would turn the Rockets into the next version of the T-Wolves, 7 straight years of 1st round playoff elimination. Now granted at this point(4 wears not making the playoffs) that may sound like an improvement, but ask any Astros fan how that will sit down the road.
Rasheed Wallace anyone? Look what he has done to Detroit, he has boosted there defense, and has boosted there offense. Now imagine what he could do if he were in a rocket uniform.
We can trade him withing a certain number of hours. I think we could trade him before the deadline of next season if we acquire him in the summer as well. Seattle wouldn't trade both. I was thinking either Ray Allen or Rashard Lewis plus one of their C's. New Orleans would easily do it. PJ Brown and Mash are getting old and can't get up and down the floor the wy the Hornets want. Mash didn't feature much this year anyway, and they were doing terriffic without him. Replace PJ Brown with Chris Webber and you easily have a top 3 or 4 seed. Magloire/Webber/Baron would be a SOLID core. Chicago - I'd probably pass on it too. I'd rather keep Webber. But Antonio Davis and Tyson Chandler are better than Cato and Mobley for this team. Hell, Chandler pulls down 7.7rebounds in around 25 minutes. That's incredible. He's a great rebounder, shotblocker, gets some garbage points. All he has to do is add a decent J, and he's SUPER for Yao. The guy is young as hell, still 20 or 21. AD basically fills Cato's role, and although he's overpaid, it may be worth it to get such a great compliment to Yao. But again, I'd rather keep Webber. Point being, only good can come out of getting Webber, whether it's by keeping him or trading him.
I was just thinking... If Rasheed wants to walk at the end of the season, and Detroit don't want him to go to New York or another Eastern contender, maybe they'd think about shipping us Rasheed, while the Kings send Webber to Detroit (back home, and contending) and we send Cato + Mobley to Sacramento?
Chris Webber is old (31 year old), Injury prone, not a winner, and has a max contract. Just say no to Chris Webber. On the otherhand, trade Francis plus filler for a young stud PF like AK47, Sheed, or Brand.
I don't mind he is 31, but he is really injury-prone. To go down last year during the playoff when it is your time to win a championship is lame. Then he has a max contract. R. Wallace is better. Even Kurt Thomas is better, value wise.
If you would have asked me before the final minute of today's game, who would you rather have... Webber or Steve, it would be a no brainer (Steve). But, Steve misses the shot... and Webber makes the shot. Go figure. Actually, I'd just take Webber for his passing alone. He created several easy opportunities today for Divac, Peja, and Christie... he could do wonders for our passing inept PF's. And, if he gets his leg anywhere close to being healthy, he'll be much more effective. But hell... he's still 10 times better than any of our PF's (combined) right now, and you can tell that he's just not healthy.
They are desperately in need of a C in order to compete with the Spurs and Lakers, and they arent many of them out there. I wonder if they would sign dampier in stead of tradding for Cato. But there is logic for them to get Cato.
I find this fascinating, in terms of team rebuilding, which I believe we must do in the summer. I don't think I want Webber or Wallace for our PF postion. I think we need someone younger to go with Yao, and grow with him. But, in terms of using either or both as trading chits, I think its an awesome move. The situation is interesting in Detroit too. They need cap room to sign Okur, so keeping Wallace is highly doubtful, since they'll have to lose one or the other, and can't afford to sign Wallace long term. But, our exception could have huge value here, allowing us to trade Boki, some picks, etc., so Wallace doesn't leave for nothing. If we were somehow able to pick up Webber and Wallace as trading chits, that would be incredible, and then utilize Francis, and possibly Taylor, Weatherspoon, and Pike as filler. There's a lot of fascinating trades that could have us end up with as many as Allen, Okafor, Chandler and Hinrich, to go along with Yao and JJ, then pick up Duhon in the second round. We'd end up with a few bad contracts we'd have to take, such as Eddie Robinson, and be over the salary cap, but I think that would be worth it. I don't have time to go over how, at the moment, but if we got both trading chits, I think its entirely possible. We need to rearrange the pieces on this team, and the only guys I would keep right now are Yao and JJ. Let the horsetrading begin ...
Totally agree with you. I'd prefer Rasheed Wallace over Webber. Rasheed is younger, less injury prone, cheaper, and can be obtained without giving up anything.
Wallace seems like a better fit in many ways, but there's no way we get him without giving up something of value. The Pistons would like to keep Wallace, but even if they decide not to, they're not going to trade him to us for nothing when other teams will offer them a lot. Don't think the Pistons will do us any favors and turn down a good deal from a division rival just because they're a division rival. The more I think about it, the less likely it seems that a package of Cato and Mobley would be enough to get Webber. As others have pointed out, many teams will give up a lot to get Webber. I don't see any reason why Sacramento would take our package over one of Antonio Davis and Chicago's top-3 pick/Chandler (for example).
Relativist - Please allow me to point out a flaw in your logic. The decision is not entirely the Pistons to make since Wallace is an UNrestricted FA. Any deal for Wallace is going to have to be a SnT which allows Wallace the right to reserve where he wants to go. His trump card is the threat to play for someones' MLE. IMO, Wallace has more say so than the Pistons. If Wallace's threat to play for an MLE is serious enough, the Piston will gladly take a Rockets 1st round pick and/or some low short contracts plus the Rockets $6.9m TE for a $6.9+M SnT. Bottomline...Wallace is much more likely to be a Rocket than Webber especially if Cuttino is still here.
I cannot say what the exact move will be in the offseason, but unless the rockets make it to the second round and do reasonably well....this team will see one major move IMHO.... does that mean SF will be moved or Cuttino and a combination to get an upgrade...not sure...but Cuttino has had a great year imho...he has been exactly what we needed at the 2...trading him would be tough for us at his price.... But, something will definitely change and I think it is at the one....I think Steve is one of the top 10 athletes in the league, but we need a quarterback too and I think we can get this plus a nice role player for him and not lose much in our offense compared to the lower turnovers...
Webber is too expensive and too old. He isn't a power player who exerts his physical presence. He is not the Power Forward needed to protect Yao Ming, infact he is the opposite and it would be a very bad move by the Rockets.
I wouldnt want webber.. he is over his prime and is getting old now. Not worth it.. i think Mo Tay is producing way better at the limited minutes. BUT you also have to factor in Webbers passing abilities.. i dont know whether i want to go for this or not.. time will tell.. e
