Yeah especially when the roads ice over and it becomes hazardous to drive... Not to mention nobody here owns a snow plow.
It's funny because all you need is a little common sense to drive on that amount of ice/snow. They dont even send out plows or and trucks for that amount of snow in Tulsa (especially with a high of 42, meaning it's slushy). It's all about experience though. The first time you drive on any stuff like that is hell. So far we've has almost 2 feet of snow in this blizzard and it's still coming down. That pic of DFW actually looks like paradise compared to here. This is what it looks like outside my apartment: Can't go anywhere if I wanted to...
Hey, we got the plows, we just can't afford to fix the terrible roads after the winter. That what it said the high in Houston will be on Friday (the "big snow day").
Latest NWS Forecast Discussion Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Houston/Galveston Texas 346 PM CST Tuesday Feb 1 2011 Discussion... cold weather has arrived and will persist into the first parts of the weekend. Have generally followed (and many times undercut) lowest ensemble MOS suggestions regarding temperatures. Hard freeze warning will obviously continue and will need to be extended each night until Friday morning. Wind chill advsy will be issued tonight for west-northwest & northern counties tonight with wind chill values forecast to dip slightly below zero. Will probably see some periods of sun on Wednesday but with the cold start and ongoing cold air advection doubt we'll see readings get out of the 30s and possibly not above freezing at all north. Expect moisture to begin overrunning the cold air at the surface on Thursday. Still anticipating a winter weather event beginning as early as late afternoon Thursday near the coast as soundings become increasingly saturated...but mostly during the overnight hours Thursday night and Friday morning. Models continuing to show trough dropping into Mexico Thursday then ejecting into Texas during the overnight hours. Some discrepancy as to what the temperature profile between models Thursday evening and wouldn't be surprised to see precipitation start out as a mix near the Galveston Bay region before converting over to snow. Have shifted the higher chances even further inland and also tweaked accums up into the 1-3" range. Am getting concerned about amounts though and at this point wouldn't be surprised to see even higher amounts in banding where ever it sets up. Canadian model will not back down on accums and this run actually shows colder 850 mb temperatures. Looked at most of the other models forecast soundings and they appeared fairly impressive at times and kinda wonder why some depict such low qpfs. Will really need to watch this. At this point...it's important to understand the forecast is susceptible to substantial quantitative precipitation forecast changes...type and where the higher amount will occur. Although the highest avail moisture is nearest the coast and southeast areas...the upper low/vorticity looks like it'll take a more nearly track than we saw xmas evening 2004 hence took the higher amounts a little further north than previous forecast. Brief "warmup" over the weekend followed by another Arctic front Monday (gfs) or Tuesday (ecmwf).
nothing makes my day working for an ISP provider like getting calls from the 574 area code with redneck farmers from warsaw, peru, north manchester, winona lake.. end rant. im sure you're a cool guy. I just hope that computer classes are offered in Indiana one day as people don't know how to use them correctly in that region
Yay more snow! I hope they're planning on salting up the streets tomorrow and Thursday. We're in for a cold ass Thursday/Friday. I love the snow!
Haha -- no offense taken. I grew up in Texas and am just here for law school, if that helps my computer literacy any in your eyes. Funny enough, we do have the 574 area code!
Yeah, I've been around OKC, thru Durant, and eastern Oklahoma on my way to Arkansas and Tennessee, and one thing I always notice is that the roads around that area of the state are horrible.
