I went to work yesterday and the place was pretty empty. Heck if I'm going in today with snow concealing the ice. This has been great! Too bad it had to happen Super Bowl week, though. We get some good snow over here in North Richland Hills. I would guess four inches.
Ain't that bad up here in Sugar Land... Most of the roads been covered in dirt to ease that ice a little.. I guess I'll have to wait another day for snow this year in Houston....
Good god, These weathermen/news reporters are a bunch of idiots. They can blow anything out of proportion, and instill fear in the peoples heart. Treacherous Ice Storm Travesty Disaster
Weather forecasters use the model data to make their forecasts. There weren't any computer models predicting what happened here or in the Dallas area (6 inches of snow).
The bridges and ramps have ice on them. There are wrecks all over town, and the traffic is all backed up. I think the cops are trying to to keep you from killing yourself or someone else. I've heard there have been several fatalities.
In other news it might reach 30 today in Minneapolis. Spoiler <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XE2fnYpwrng" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Somewhat seriously though two very important things of advice for Houstonians Get one of these: The snow isn't so much the problem as the ice and have an iced up windshield really sucks. Here is the proper usage Also keep some cat litter and plenty of windshield washer fluid. Get the blue kind not and not regular water as water will freeze up your windshield wash lines. The cat litter is for added traction incase your car gets stuck on a patch of ice. Put it infront of your wheels. And remember, DON'T PANIC
Officially, 37 straight days without being above 32. 66 straight days where the temperature has been below freezing. I'm missing a couple of weeks worth while working in Brazil.
Not at home. My heater hasn't worked for years and I have no intentions of ever getting it fixed. Some nights are more brutal than others, but I've managed OK so far.
So basically you're comparing your reaction to snow to a bunch of poor widows and 80-year old shut-ins? LOL - you may want to aim a bit higher. I actually didin't find driving in snow and ice and chicago that hard, I maybe lost control or spun out maybe once that i recall, but everybody just drives really slow and doesn't panic, and only drives when necessary; seems like the collective hysteria over such things in southern cities tends to exacerbate the problem.
Honestly that seems kind of foolish. It might not snow very often in Houston but it annually drops below 40. There is hypothermia risk even in the 50's if not properly kept warm. Having camped in sub 40 degree weather even with gortex it still wasn't comfortable. You might want not use your heater much but you should make sure it is at least in working order just in case.
