    probable.

early Feb is the last few weeks of winter over here...so Chicago may very well have snow on the ground...I'll check with the kid(he lives there) when he is in town this weekend and let you know.

    thanks Eddiewassnubbed

any reccomendations for sites to search for cheap airfares, in particular LA to NY, NY to Chicago, Chicago to Houston and Houston to LA

anyone have thoughts on using the train between New York and Chicago, seems cheapish, would it be scenic at that time of year

gotta pull some costs together and check a few things out this weekend, and will make a definite decision then on another smeggy world tour

Just be aware...if you happen to hit a good cold front at any of these ('cept LA) it can be quite chilly. The longterm forecasts are showing that we're likely to have a warm Jan-Feb-Mar 2006 ( http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/predictions/long_range/two_class.html). If Houston doesn't have any fronts in Feb, it can also get warm. All-time high for Feb is 91 F. Can never count out that random front, though. All-time Feb low is 20 F. http://www.intellicast.com/Local/US...toricWeather&product=ClimateData&prodnav=0214

BTW, why LA over San Francisco, Smeg? Do you like Disney and Universal?

If I'm not mistaken, the train runs through Buffalo. It used to run through my town, but the station has been closed down and is being rebuilt. Mostly, you'd see many things covered in snow. There are hills, "mountains", farmlands, lakes, etc. in central New York. I guess it'd be pretty scenic to see them all covered in snow, depending on your take. I'm not sure how it would be once you got out of New York though...

Maybe, the last few winters in a row have been v. cold in NYC. 3 years ago around president's day (feb 12 or something) there was a massive blizzard withich shut the city down.

As for Chicago it comes and goes, no doubt it will be cold, whether or not its snowy is anybody's guess. - if it's a bad winter there will be left over brown snow all over the place from previous months - avoid that. The first year I lived there there was an incredibly huge blizzard in late march that just came up all of a sudden.

I think that is a great idea! Good thinking!

Niagara is only about 15 miles from Buffalo (it'd be about a 20 minute drive), and would be VERY scenic at that time of the year. I've only been there once, and never during the winter, but they have beautiful pictures there that were taken in the winter time. I've never been to the Canada side, but I've always heard it is way better.

By the way, if you go through Grand Island, disregard the bridge. That has got to be one of the ugliest/nastiest bridges ever.
