Yea... I'll NEVER understand why people don't make that tiny extra bit of effort to wear a seatbelt. You really stop noticing it after a couple of minutes, as your nerve endings become sensitized to it. Think of your clothes... you feel them when you first put them on, but after awhile, you no longer have that feeling, and its just normal. Take off your clothes, and you feel it... take off your seatbelt in a moving car, and its a REALLY weird feeling for me.
Why do people keep saying "oh theres a percentage of people who it'll kill blah blah blah"? If you can't even define who that 1% is or the conditions for it, then you have no clue what you're talking about so don't pretend you do.
hayjon.. there is a percentage.. in cases where like codell said where they were able to move to the side etc.. I think most people say there is at least a small small percentage that are better off without one than with one.. so I really don't see why it is a problem to state that.
Yep, and those people are not justifying not wearing a seatbelt, they are just stating that a small percentage of people have at one time benefited from not wearing one.
Does anyone know at what speed would a seat belt NOT be too necessary? I went to a small town college and never bought a car there. So I rode in the cabs quite often. The place is small and congested enough that cars normally go 20-30 mph. NONE of the cab drivers wear seat belts, and most of them give me a weird look when I do so. Some asks if I question their driving skills. Of course, I tell them it's just a habit because I grew up in Houston, where people drive really fast. But I wonder if seat belts are just as important when you're not going very fast. You'd think cab drivers should know to wear them if they're helpful enough.
smeggy.. it's illegal in the front seat.. I believe adults aren't required to wear them in the back seat..
I am pretty sure that is exactly right. I'll add that the penalty for nto wearing one is a fine. I am not positive the exact ammount but it used to be $50. It may be higher now.
I'm trying to remember what age you have to wear one up to in the back seat. on this subject.. its horrible from reports I've heard over the years how many people dont keep their kids in proper car seats etc up to the right age. . the it's just around the corner.. they can be out of a car seat thing that I'm sure many parents have been guilty of doing before.
You could be pulling through an intersection, or even stopped, and someone could plow into you and cause you to be ejected from your vehicle. So I would recommend wearing your seatbelt at all times.
Good point, you never know what will happen. Even in a residential area some jackass may be going 50.
There was a TV campaign fairly recently in the UK about wearing seatbelts in the back too. It was pretty graphic, and demonstrated that someone not wearing a setbelt in the back can kill the person sitting in front of them, with the impact that they make on the back of the chair in an accident.
Sorry about your friends, Jeff. I used to never wear a seatbelt. Four or five years ago I was in the passenger seat driving through downtown Houston with my girlfriend. We were on our way to see Daniel Johnston at Rudyards. We were doing about 30 heading south on Main from her place at Houston House and a bunch of teenagers blazed through a stop sign, right in front of her. No time at all to stop. Totalled her car and if she hadn't had airbags, I would have gone through the windshield. Instead I just smashed both my knees into the dash. Now every time I bend my left knee it pops. And we missed Daniel Johnston. Eventually I'll have to have reconstructive surgery. I've worn a seatbelt ever since. I won't ride without one and I won't let anyone else ride with me without one.
I lost a good friend a few years ago. His parents made me promise that I'd always buckle up for the rest of my life. A seat belt probaly wouldn't have saved him but it saddens because we'll never know for sure. I usually did even before that but now I'll always buckle up and make sure everybody else is also buckled up. If they refuse to than I kick them out of the car suprsingly I have had to do that quite a few times. It amazes me on why this is such a big issue to some people. I hope everything works out for your friend Jeff "Thank God I ain't to cool for the safe belt" Kanye West
