Exactly. And as limited as he is, every time Howard makes a strong move his defender flops to draw a foul. Every time Howard secures a rebound and clear his space, he gets whistled. The deck is stacked against big men doing work in the paint. In a sense, Cuban is right about how Dirk is the model for modern NBA big men, but not for good reasons.

 

The entire point of the zone defense is to allow for easier double teams without having to truly commit to defending any particular offensive player. This also makes it much harder for the offensive team to drop an entry pass down to the big man, allows the defense to camp the passing lanes.

If you remember, George Karl's Supersonics use to do this against Hakeem back when it was illegal and the refs allowed it for some stupid reason. Nate McMillan and Kendall Gill use to get away with murder. Its one of the main reasons we had trouble beating the Sonics back then.

Zone defense in college is different, in college you don't have as many big athletic guys who are capable of shifting as quickly on the court, the level of competition is such where a zone defense is harder to perfect from a defensive standpoint. You have to recruit players specifically for it the way Jim Boeheim did it at Syracuse.
