Although I haven't seen the movie, and like BK I'm getting pretty sick of the previews/commercials, this WILL be a movie I see.

Voice, like you, I don't pass judgement on anything without some kind of awareness or experience. And I'm certainly not going to bet on someone else's perception...especially when it concerns movies.

I got your back on this one.

Oh, btw, Apocalypes Now is by far my favorite war flick...if you count the number of times I've seen it. For all you Apoc Now fans, try reading the book Journey to the Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad or see the movie with the same title with John Malkovics (sp?). Talk about a journey to one's dark side...whew!

oh no, bull rider.
It is "the difference in opinion" that I enjoy about communicating with others. without a difference of opinion what does it all matter?? This however means that communication in necessary. in this thread I said nothing ill about those who may have seen the movie and dissagreed with my view. I stated that it is ignorant to lambast something based on what you have heard, not based on your own actual experience. I love most of the movies stated by others in here. The meat of my last post was to give my taste as an example as well as give good reasons to go see this film. you see I am aware that this is not a "must see" film as far as critics are concerned. I think people should probably see this film for the reasons i have posted above.

now as far as my hostility topwards the people on this board. sure why bother. i agree. it is for that reason i dont spend nearly as much time interactin on this board as i have in the past. there is only so much negativity that one should have to bear. however i am an optimist. I have not given up on the people of this world even with all the crazy stuff that goes on in it. I also will not give up on this BBS as a source to share ideas and experiences. so if you have a problem with my contempt for ignorance(and yes, judging something before actually experienceing it is Ignorance/prejudice) than why do you take the time to post about it. you can ignore me as well you know. its just a simple optionunder settings.

and now to slide back onto topic:
I am greatly looking forward to Nick cage's new summer war flick.
previews look great.

PEACE

I heard the movie was really good. Very innovative. And if you can do that for a War movie about Vietnam then you've done a hell of a job. I'm very interested in seeing this movie. The trailors looked boring, but the word on the street has changed my mind completely.

Saw the movie today.

A tremendous film, not the best war movie ever, but top 10. Mel Gibson is just one great actor. And the movie doesn't moralize about who was "right or wrong" in Vietnam. It's very fair and really well done.

One of those movies where you just sit for a while during the credits....and then get a couple of drinks:rolleyes:

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/movie-1112647/

Of the 78 ratings here 51 were positive and 27 were rotten.

Maybe I have spoken too soon. If so, the previews don't do the movie justice because it seems lame. I can't possibly imagine it being better than Black Hawk Down or Saving Private Ryan.

i really think it is better than Black hawk down. I hope you continue to warm to this film. Its the kind of film that certainly should be seen in a theatre. and hell if you are afraid of paying the $9.50, i will throw you a bone if i ever make it to houston :)

and you are right, the previews do nothing to help this film

Peace

We Were Soldiers was great, because there was really no point to it. That's a good thing, though, because there was really no point to the whole Vietnam War, so it was a good representation of the entire time. Plus, they didn't throw some sappy love story in there, which is always good for war movies. (COUGH***pearl harbor***COUGH).

Also, one of the soldiers that died during the battle depicted in the movie was from my home town of Texas City, TX...

Cool site. That rotten tomatoe's site is a good idea. It basically takes all the newspaper reviews and compiles them for your reference.

That's cool. I come from the school of "I'm not paying $8 to see a movie that looks like a compendium of war-movie cliches".

Why don't you just calm down? All I said was that I had no interest in seeing it based on what I knew about it at that time.

I am sorry I have not reached the point of maturity where I experience every single piece of pop culture rather than selectively experiencing just some of them. But, because I work for a living, I have certain time and money constraints that prevent me from paying to see every single movie-- as you obviously must do, given that you find the decision not to see a movie based on its trailer and television commercials "ignorant". Unlike yourself, I have to wallow in ignorance by actually have to pick and choose which movies I pay to go see.

It seemed to me, and this may just be my opinion fogging what VoR said, but its not the decision to see/not see a movie based on a trailer that is ignorant, but to base your opinion of that entire movie based solely on the trailer that is ignorant.

I didnt see Black Hawk Down because the trailer made it look like a Pearl Harbor clone. But I'm not going to go around saying whether it actually did suck or was a cliche based solely off the preview.

Haven't seen "We Were Soldiers" yet, but the book is fantastic. "A Bright Shining Lie" is also a very good first-person account of Vietnam. Just for kicks, here's my 10 favorite war movies (in order):

Patton
Bridge on the River Kwai
Black Hawk Down
Full Metal Jacket
Lawrence of Arabia
The Thin Red Line
Platoon
The Great Escape
Saving Private Ryan
Tora Tora Tora

the thin red line is the greatest war movie ever.

nothings better then pounding a few shots of vodka and watching nick nolte scream at people and random camera shots of parrots and bats and snakes.
, its one of the most philosophical movies ive ever seen. death, nature, war, great music.

most of you probably thought it was pretty boring. am i right? has no one seen it?:(

I thought it was a great movie, superior to Saving Private Ryan. You should read the book by James Jones (he also wrote "From Here to Eternity").

It's funny though, many of my friends hated the movie.

Most people hated TRL,not me.I thought it was probably the most thought provoking war movie I've seen.I think a lot of people hated it because it does nothing to "glorify" war.

What is so hard to comprehend about this?

I said:

That looks like a pretty straightforward statement to me. The previews, and commercials, were rife with what I consider to be war-movie cliches. Based on the fact that the previews and commercials are supposed to try to get you to see a movie by showing you a representative slice of what the movie's about, I think it's entirely reasonable to deduce from that that the movie might be one long rerun and thus decide not to see it.

Note, that I didn't "go around saying whether it actually did suck or was a cliche". I said it looked like one and as such, I wasn't interested in seeing it.

I thought that if "Dude Where's My Car?" were a food, it would be the pureed mush they serve people whose respective intellectual capacity has diminished to the point they can't feed themselves. As such, I never saw it. Evidently, I was in the wrong-- you're not allowed to form a personal opinion as to whether or not a movie is worth watching until after you've seen it, based on the new standards that are being suggested here.

Does this also apply to television? Do I have to start watching "Survivor" and wrestling instead of deciding they look idiotic and would be a waste of my time...?

What about Rosie O'Donnell's talk show?

Infomercials?

Spurs games?

Saw the movie today and it was moving. It's simple but right in your face. A better movie than Black Hawk Down IMHO.

Hey, I never said you did. I just said if someone did, that would be ignorant. What you have is done is perfectly ok with me. :)
