Actually, right now the odds are 50/50 until Deron goes off the market.

When folks realize that we don't have a quality back up once he or Dragic walks......there will be regret.....

Quality backups are something you worry about when you have a solid starting squad. We need to get somebody to build this team around first and then worry about who is backing up people later.

I'm all for draft picks too and that's why I want to trade Lowry for a pick and try to resign Dragic. If we lose them both at least we get a shot on hitting it big with a top ten pick.

I do think this is the one wildcard in this deal. Lowry's small deal could give a receiving team a good point guard AND some cap flexibility to fill out the roster with. If it wasn't for Deron Williams, I would think a trade for Lowry had an equal chance. But Deron Williams is out there and teams with enough cap space to sign him aren't going to want to surrender the chance to try.

Trading Lowry to Portland before or during the draft would be smart for three reasons:

    1. Getting Portland's lottery pick would be huge.
    2. We show Gogi that we are committed to him, and that he will be the starter.
    3. We take our prime competition to signing Gogi, Portland, off the market. This allows us to resign Gogi to a more reasonable contract.

I do not worry about this position, I worry about our big position, big men. You can have the best PG to play for our team, but if we don't fill up the middle with rebounders and inside post scoring, we will be fighting for the last few spots. Dragic is a better defensive PG, but Lowry has the tough in PG. Both can do their job, but both will be irrelevant if we don't improve the middle.

Actually, if we could make a trade similar to the OP's idea (Lowry for a pick), we have more cap space. If we then failed to sign Dragic, we would get even more cap space. Just saying, the worst-case scenario here isn't that bad.

That would be interesting! It would show Dragic we're committed to bringing him back & would give us picks #11, #14, & #16 to move up in the draft for an impact player which in turn could be B. Beal or MKG. I'd make it Lowry, Dal 1st, & Budinger since he's in his last year of his contract & we have Parsons already in place.

I think Dragic played great but aside from having better passing numbers, I wasn't so impressed that I would abandon a healthy Lowry for him unless he was the exact same cost or cheaper. Maybe the Rockets and their medical staff know something I don't but I believe Lowry would have a bigger upside.
That being said, Deron Williams would be the better option of the three.

But as bloodwings19 said, this isn't that much of a concern, given the state of the other positions on the team. None of the potential PGs will be able to do much to improve our lot within the Western conference if our only scoring post player remains just Luis Scola.

Not really. We might grab a good backup with the #14, or trade for one. That won't be too tough.

The trick will be clearing that player out next year for Sergio Llull.

I've said it a million times and I'll say it again. I think giving up on Lowry just to keep Dragic is not a good idea. Unless it's a trade to bring in a star player right away or to move way up in the draft, I think Lowry is the better PG and the one the Rockets should keep.

Its not giving up on Lowry.

Giving up implies that we have committed to some system to win and it just isn't working.

This is a sell high move to help get us better pieces going forward.

This. Dragic is at least comparable to Lowry. He's probably better though. Regardless, one of them is going to be gone. When it's either letting dragic walk for nothing or getting something in return for Lowry, I choose the latter.

Dragic is bigger, faster, as good a defender and can actually contest shots, a much better offensive game, and is a better pure pg than Lowry. I dont see how that can be argued.

That is all that it is. Lowry has done a lot for this team. For us to just give up on him would imply that he is worthless. This is just a better business move. Thats all.

then why can't we just let go of Dragic..... I know he played well as a starter but he was not a constant top tier point guard

The constant is he has good size and has a good way running the team
    Shooting will come and go.

Either way keep him or trade Lowry.... I don't really care if we have a backup plan. We need major talent upgrade at the OTHER 4 SPOTS!
Personally I'd trade Martin, Scola, Patterson, Morris, Dalembert, Bud, Greg Smith before him.
