We should target Hassan Whiteside as the second max

I think Horford is going to the Knicks.

I agree with these points. That's why i'm all in for Horford, with him you're sure to have a great guy in the locker room first.

But in the end you have to use your cap space, that's why i'm ok with Hassan as plan B, C or whatever...you're always gaining an asset since you also have Capela. It's a risk, but imo still better than overpay guys like Anderson.

I probably prefer horford on balance for the reasons you state (although it's a very close call and depends on who we have to cut or trade), but have the following reservations -

    1. he's older so his max is the big max compared to Whitesidenwhich makes it tougher to afford him
    2. He's not a true center
    3. He's older so he'll decline sooner; he's been playing out of position for a long time; I worry about his drop off even if his games isn't about acceleration

For Whiteside, he's averaging 14.5 pts/17rbs/4.5blks per 36. Not sustainable but even 70% of that is max. If we got a good defensive minded coach for the team, with him patrolling the rim we could really be terrific defensively. I get that's he's been a slow bloomer and is a headache, but if you get durant on the team and a good coach I'll bet he falls in line. Cousins, Randolph etc were all bad seeds who became completely worth it.

He's gonna get the max no matter what. The question is whether Miami will figure out a way to do it. Otherwise we stand a decent shot to get him I think.

Not a fan of bringing back former employees. However, looking at the pool, and what is available, this would be a major upgrade for us on both ends.

I don't see it. We don't know if the Hawks will offer Horford 5 years at max money. They are the only team that can do it, and that is a big advantage for them. That's the type of deal that kept Bosh in Miami instead of coming to Houston.

All other teams with max room can only offer 4 years. So then, at that point money is the same (though better in TX/Florida via taxes). So at this point Horford will look for FIT. And probably to play with a top flight contending team. Houston fits the bill.

I think a case could be made for Horford "going home" to Florida/Orlando as they would be interested. But they wouldn't be contending.

Whiteside will have far better options during offseason than rockets

Houston is not a very attractive destination and playing with harden doesn't ring a "wow" factor... you'd have to overpay to get top FA unfortunately, just the reality.

No state tax in Florida as well... plus you know Miami gave him the opportunity while we discarded him.
Guys like Terrence Ross & John Henson are making 11+ million/year

I just don't understand this thinking. None of us know what top FAs think about playing with Harden or the rockets.

All I know is the rockets have gotten meetings with every marquee FA since Harden has arrived and we signed one of them. That's better than 95% of the league.

I don't see players taking meetings with the pacers to play with Paul George or Washington with John wall.

And by the way every top FA is getting the max so saying we have to overpay is a reach. Any team that signs these guys are overpaying by your standards I guess.

I say I'll take whiteside over Horford becuase Horford jumpshot is very inconsistent and if he's not hitting his jumpers he's terrible I'd Just rather take the risk on whiteside

I'd love to have Whiteside on the team.
But a: why would he willingly leave Miami?
b: Why would we pay max for a center when we didn't utilize the one we have/had properly?
As much as I like Whiteside, I'd rather invest that money into a point guard or power forward instead.

I agree. Question is, will Wade take less in order to bring in Whiteside? How much cap space can Miami finagle since they're paying Wade (who has a cap hold), Bosh (whose salary will not come off the cap until 2017) and Dragic ($17m or so)? But I agree there will be competition for Whiteside. Anyone who doesn't think Whiteside won't get a max is dreaming.
