Huh? He's not mentoring him on how to shave his face or be a father. He'll mentor him on the NBA game which TW has only been playing for just over a year and in limited minutes. Happens all the time with vets and young players...
That's ludicrous. Many successful people can point to another person that has helped them in their path, especially in business and sports. William Buffett had Benjamin Graham as a mentor. Now Buffet has mentored many successful investors. http://www.mentors.ca/mp_business.html
The point is how can shane mentor him to be an all-star when he's never been even close to one ...it's not rocket science anyone in the league can play hard or take a charge you don't need shane for that, that job belongs to the coach and his staff on getting players to buy into that.
I dont think many really believe he can make him or mentor him to be an all-star specifically, but just to maximize his potential and/or improve more. JW already has the talent and that's great, since its something you can't teach. He's lacking the hard work ethic to keep learning and be a professional. That's where Battier comes in. JW can have all the talent in the world, but if he remains a knucklehead he's not going anywhere. There's a lot more preparation, physically and mentally, that goes into the NBA game. It's not just about giving it a try.
Theres no guarentee that this is a permanent move for Morey. TWilliams might be a rental, or Bud/Battier will be on the move in February. Morey does not make this deal unless he has another one in the works now or in the future. TWill has two months to show what he could do for this team. He will get his opportunity to run Shane or Bud out of town, whether Battier is needed or not is up to Terrance Williams on the court and off the court.
There is no way that T-Will makes battier expendable, if anything he made battier even more valuable. Have you see the guy's turnover numbers? He's a classic coach killer, he's got similar talents as Lee but thinks he is way better than he is.
Jordan's mentor was Phil Jackson, who averaged 6.7 ppg, 4.3 rebs, 1.1 assists. You don't have to be an MVP player to be a mentor. It is alway about maximizing the gifts a player has. Even though Pjax offensive limitations were major, it didn't stop him from mentoring Jordan.
With the exception of the LA game (turning point this season hopefully), Battier has been very dissapointing. But I do not think it is a good idea to trade him. We do not have many veterans in this team and it is evident we need them. Basically only him and Brad Miller.
I'm calling it now: two weeks in as a rocket for Terrence and we will be seeing quotes from him in the newspaper about praising Shane and his leadership.
