I've been thinking about going after Chris Paul. You could offer the Hornets Brooks, Hill, Battier, and BOTH of the Knicks' picks. They would never get a better offer than that - young talent, plus multiple 1st rounders.

Then turn around and sign & trade Scola plus Budinger, Jeffries, and the right to Lull for Bosh - maybe throw in our own 1st rounder next year as well.

Finally, sign Mike Miller and Brad Miller with the MLE and you get:

    PG: Paul/Lowry
    SG: Martin/Taylor
    SF: Ariza/Miller
    PF: Bosh/Patterson
    C: Yao/Miller

That's better team than what Lebron would have in Chicago or New York. Think about how deadly Paul would be with all of those shooters around him.

Glad you are not Morey. When Tmac said he was leaving, Magic got one all star, one near all star and one solid starter while getting rid of bad contracts.

A real max player will get you a lot in return, especially when other team's only choice is SnT.

His team can simply deny Houston's leverage if they feel they are not getting enough in return. Houston doesn't have cap space to sign the player outright even if the player wants to come, thus, no leverage at all.

We have no cap space and therefore we can't just sign Bosh. We would have to acquire him in a sign and trade so we need Toronto's cooperation.

This is what we got for Pippen and we had more leverage.

Kelvin Cato, Stacey Augmon, Walt Williams, Ed Gray, Brian Shaw and Carlos Rogers

Wow...didn't see that one coming. On the surface that looks like a really bad move. Well, bad for Jeffereson, good for the Spurs.

No, actually in the case of Pippen, we were trading from a position of weakness. Pippen had a a huge contract and he was less than impressive in his first post-Bulls season. Additionally Pippen and Barkely's little spat was well know and everyone knew that we had to trade Pippen. Once teams saw that Pippen wasn't a #1 guy, nobody wanted to pay $20M per season for him. The only thing that saved the Rockets was that this was during the time period when Paul Allen was spending money as if he was printing it in the basement.

Pippen at that stage wasn't even close to a real max player anymore.

I've never seen confirmation on this, but I believe the Rox got a $5million TPE out of the T-Mac deal. At least, that's how I had it worked out. They don't publish lists of these things., but...

Opting out right move for RJ?

    Posted by Art Garcia

On the surface it appears Richard Jefferson opting out of the last year of his contract for $15.2 million is a major gamble. Some league observers half-heartedly speculated that RJ won’t make $15.2 million the rest of his career.

    Ouch.

While it’s a safe bet Jefferson won’t make that kind of money next season, especially coming off a disappointing year in San Antonio, the small forward could take advantage of a seller’s market. With at least eight teams out there with significant cap room and only so many star players to go around, Jefferson could easily be seen as a safe fallback.

Even after LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki, Amar’e Stoudemire, Joe Johnson and Carlos Boozer come off the board, there’s going to be money out there to spend and clubs who were shut out of the above.

Remember the $80 million combined Detroit spent last summer on Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva? Some team is going to panic — Clippers or Knicks, perhaps — and reach out to RJ to make sure its summer isn’t a total washout.

Jefferson is hardly damaged goods. He just turned 30 this month and even though he averaged just 12.3 points as a bad fit in the Spurs’ system last season, he’s still got a career scoring average of 17.0 and has been reasonably durable. He can run, is considered coachable and doesn’t make waves in the locker room.

Getting back in a running offense with a pass-first point guard, instead of San Antonio’s halfcourt attack built around Tim Duncan and Tony Parker‘s shoot-first mentality, could signal a career rebirth for Jefferson. Maybe that’s worth a contract similar to the five years and nearly $40 million Shawn Marion received from Dallas last summer.

Or maybe the Spurs work out a new contract for a more cap-friendly figure with Jefferson, realizing he’s still probably a better option than anything San Antonio can realistically hope to find on the open market. Jefferson signing a new deal now does protect him from possible salary rollbacks of the next CBA.

In another other year, opting out of such a windfall would seem extremely foolish. Maybe RJ is smarter than the rest of us.
