DD is a good coach but not a championship coach. I can see them going undefeated during the regular season but losing in the first round of the playoffs. He going to overplay the two older kids and not develop the younger 4 year olds.
I coached a very immature, unskilled team of 4-5 year olds last year (Fall and Spring season). We didn't score 10 goals all year but nobody scored more than 8 on us (6-minute quarters). No goalies here either. Makes you wonder...
We won games last year 27-2, 25-3, 26-1.....etc.... This was our first game, and the other team was a team of really shy kids, I was rolling the ball in front of them trying to get them to get involved. and it just wasn't working. We have 6 kids......4 of them are pretty darn good players, and 1 is ok, where the last one is really shy. I am a pretty loud guy, I get down on their level and make it really fun, in practice we work on taking the ball away from the other team and then scoring the ball. You guys are correct we do not keep official score but some of the parents do, and so do I, but it is really hard when the other team is so shy......how do you tell your kids to stop scoring? We have to rotate them all in....I guess it is just a hard lesson for the kids on the short end of the stick, but dang it is hard to watch. And, the difference between me and former Rocket coaches? I coach the young uns up ! DD
I had one little girl who "took root" at midfield in her first game experience. She wouldn't even turn around to watch the action. That went on for quite a while. Last game of the season, though, she actually scored! Most Improved Player.
What I have learned is to make it really fun in practice, we have lots of scoring games, where everyone gets a chance to score the ball and at the end of every practice, we put on different colored jerseys and scrimmage, so our kids get some real game type action each practice. It makes a huge difference. Also, I show them how shin guards make it easy to get in there and mix it up, we take the ball away a lot, and then we have some really skilled dribblers closing the deal. Another thing to do is give them the ball at one end of the field and start a countdown, they have like 7 seconds to score...it gets them moving more quickly and making quicker decisions. The hardest thing so far is getting a 4 year old to pass the ball, we got a few passes last year, but this year none yet...they all try to take the ball away from each other.... Gotta work on that........ I wish JVG would coach soccer, I would OWN his A$$ !!!! DD
I heard DaDakota is under investigation. He would tape his kids' games, but sometimes the camera would 'accidentally' lost focus and start zooming in on the opposing coach.
Watching little kids play soccer is too cute! DD, Better enjoy stress-free games while you can because it gets violent when the kids grow up. I get nervous just watching my sweetie play with 20, 30, 40, 50, & 60 yrs old men.
We play 3 on each side and no keepers, probably explains the high scoring, my son scored a goal on the kickoff last year....just booted it and it went all the way down the field into the net..... Fields are only about 40 yards long total, and we keep the ball moving, it never stops, if it goes out of play we roll a new one in, pronto. DD
Cohen, We are in the under 5 league at Austin United, my 4 year old is playing. Today we had a scrapper of a game, we were down 7-5 at the half, and ended up winning 16-11, my son scored 7 goals today ...3 in the first half and 4 in the 2nd. He was exhausted, basically he is the only kid on my team that will get in there and mix it up on defense to steal the ball.....got to get him some help. He was crying a little bit at the end as he got taken out as he scored his 7th goal.....the other team was very physical, and he needs to get used to that. We have one kid on our team who is an AMAZING athlete, but can not remember which way we are going as a team.....today he scored a goal for the other side, then immediatly scored on the other end for us....it was pretty funny. It is a blast watching these little guys go up and down the field, I still need to coach some of them up, our team's biggest guy doesn't want to hustle, he pushes and then falls on the ground on purpose, pretty annoying. Anyway...2-0.....off to a good start, and my son is averaging a little over 6 goals a game....WOOT ! DD
Yes, that is it, it is all about my personal glory. Or.... Maybe I am just wanting all of them to have fun, and enjoy the game of soccer. None of them know the score, some ask whether we won, but I say...I think it was too close, I really don't know...maybe a tie. I just enjoy watching them play and seeing their joy when they score goals, and make good plays.... Got to make it fun.....for my personal glory of course. DD
Make sure to run up the score. You'll thank me when the coaches poll comes out on Monday. It'll be the only way you'll crack the top ten.
ROFLMAO.....If I only played my good players, I wonder what the score would be? And we are already the top ranked team in the neighborhood. DD
