You really don't "get" defensive rating, do you?

The game was NOT lost solely on turnovers, it definitely was NOT lost because of our defense. If you don't turn the ball over 20 times, those 3's dont hurt as badly as they did. Just like in football, if you protect the ball, the chances of you winning the game are significantly higher.

Of those 17 shots made by Ellis/Curry, i would estimate about 13-14 of them were highly contested shots.

This brings me back to my original IQ statement. Points per game doesn't fully indicate how well your defense plays. You're sadly mistaken if you think PPG is the only factor that goes into a team's defense.

Why did JVG's defense seem so efficient? Because of the much slower offensive pace they played.

RA's offense is a much faster pace which means more possessions for the opposing team which then means higher scoring games.

I actually enjoy posting in this forum and watching all you nerds attack like little ants on piece of candy on the ground. It is very amusing to me.

You've never played ball, can't guard you shadow, and your moms never let you play sports, but you're great at stats. Go Nerd Boy!

    How lame.

Anyway, this thread is dumb and I don't want to reply but should point out that everyone needs to remember that YAO our 7 foot rim protector did not play one second of this game.

While he was on the court against the Lakers we actually saw how big of a difference he makes to 6'7" Chuck Hayes manning the center position.

YAO HAS A HUGE IMPACT ON OUR DEFENSE! And with him being limited now, we are going to have our ups and downs, mainly downs.

Giving up 132 points means you are not playing good defense.

Yes, there are other factors that should go into consideration when one evaluates defense but PPG cannot be overlooked.

JVG's scheme reduces the number of shots but he also puts a great deal of emphasis on help defense. We were giving up way too many open looks in the last two games.

We play loose and lazy defense last night and in the last few minutes of the 3rd quarter during the LA games.

Poor defense will always cost you games.

Wow. Freak out and totally over-react much?

Speak for yourself, BND. I'm fine. I wish we'd have won a game or two at this point, but the sky is definitely not falling yet.

Why do you think just playing basketball makes you more knowledgeable about NBA team defense? Even most NBA players would be terrible at being coaches because they don't understand basketball theories. JVG, by all accounts a good coach, never played a minute of NBA basketball and only very little, from what I remember, of DIII ball.

I agree with you.. our defense wasn't very good last night, but lets also give credit where its due to the Warriors' offense. They were just on fire and we couldnt score on the inside because of THEIR LENGTH.

Under JVG, our help defense was good because of Yao. When there's no YAO, our help defense suffers (much like last year) because we had no length.

Lakers' defense is good because of their length inside, not because of their back court defense.

Our defense was still pretty good in the Ron-Ron days...because we had a healthy Yao for 77 games, and a healthy Deke off the bench.

Once Yao gets back into the mix of things, Brad Miller gets acclimated, and Jordan Hill gets some playing, our defense will more than likely be rated top 10. I'm not saying that Miller and Hill are great defensively, but its their length that will bother the opposition.

JVG did play basketball at a small college so has a very good understanding of the gmae. I think playing the game gives u a different perspective than the guy who always watched from the sideline or couch.

My apologies to those that think we are suddenly going to get better at something we sucked at since JVG left. It appears that improvement is needed across the board in every area on the Rockets on D. Not one bright spot.

But ur correct the sky is definitely not falling, only the dunks, layups, and jumpshots of other teams. I've been down with the Rockets since 86" and had the pleasure of watching Elie, Horry, Max, Dream, OT, shut teams down.

This, comparing us to them is an insult to the Kings.

I agree with you on the Yao factor. He is the difference maker in JVG's system.

However, our perimeter defense has to improve even in the absence of Yao. The open looks Steve Blake got at the end of 3rd quarter in the Laker's game were inexcusable. You don't play perimeter defense giving the shooter that much space.

I love motion offense. Let's see some motion on the defensive end as well.

And I watched Calvin, Rudy and Moses play in person, so I'm not exactly a noob. ;)

I agree that we won't be an elite team until we get a stronger, more consistent defensive presence. But I don't think Adelman's the problem; our starting guards simply aren't good defensively. Normally, we could've brought in Lowry, who would have at least made Curry work a bit to get his points.

And while I'm not ready to write Battier off as useless, like some posters here are, I do think we're going to see him struggle on the second game of back-to-backs. He's not a young guy anymore.

Not to mention we were without that 7'6 Chinese guy. The key cog between a top 10 defensive team year in year out and uh.. last year.

Wonder if he would help out on defense and rebounding.

I'd take being those Kings teams right about now. They had a really good run and boy were they fun to watch even as a non-fan.

We are the Kings on offense, we score just as they do, however, we worse when it comes to D with little changes being made by the coaching staff. In addition, the Kings could never get key stops in the playoffs to win games
