You give the foul to reduce the amount of time the other team has to get a shot off.

If someone on offense has any sort of reasonable attempt to take a shot as the game-clock winds down, you foul them BEFORE THEY SHOOT to force an out-of-bounds play with little time left. Since Melo was at the 3-point line and about to create his own shot, Wright fouled him, but it wasn't called. Instead of Melo getting off the game-winning shot, the Nuggets should have been throwing the ball in-bounds with only 2 seconds left.

The risk in giving the foul is savvy shooters see it coming and will start the motion of shooting just before the foul occurs. The defender has to use their head.

A common mistake that happens is defenders will commit the foul earlier than necessary when the offensive player has no chance at scoring. Ideally, the foul should be given as late as possible.

    that sucks for the mavs.

the league should let them play the last few seconds of the game just to be fair; right before game 4. but, of course it ain't happening.

I know we would have been livid if anything like that were to happen to us.

I would feel bad for them, but I still remember them getting that Finley steal when he was out of bounds. Karma baby.....karma

I think it is poetic justice.

With any regular season game, the refs can call multiple fouls per possession, if they so choose. The ref do choose to call the subjective "more serious" fouls and let the others ride.

At the end of a close regular season game, the refs calls fewer fouls.

In playoffs, the refs let more fouls go and let "the players decide the game". At the end a close playoff game, the refs appear to only call hard fouls on the shooter. Outside of that, it is Karl-Malone-Drexler-Bear-Hug time.

I do not feel sorry for the Mavs. They should have fouled harder.

Of course, from what I saw of the game the Mavs were getting away with a ton of fouls. Who can blame them, if the refs are going to eat their whistles.

there were 89 free throws shot in this game between both teams

61 fouls called!!! more than a foul per each minute of play. they did anything but eat their whistles...they blew them for anything and everything throughout the game. 27 fouls called on the Mavs...34 called on the Nuggets

i'm not a mavs sympathizer at all....but the refs did an absolutely awful job calling that game. they became the story throughout.

did you watch the game or are you just basing that opinion on the number of calls?

i did watch. that was wayyyyyyyy too many fouls called. i just felt like the refs became the story of the game. i hate when that happens.

i don't know what the record for fouls in a game is....but wow, 61 is whole helluva lot.

    We can agree to disagree.

I saw hard fouls on every rebound, that were not called.

Player were getting pushed to the ground. No call.

Jason Kidd, who is one of the very best 1-on-1 defenders, was pushing with his forearm. No call.

I stopped watching the game, due to the rough play and lack of fouls. If I want rough play, I will just watch hockey.

I think the Mavs will have the refs on their side tonite.

It's unprecedent that the NBA office issued a statement to admit the refs missed a foul call in the final seconds just a couple of hours after the game. It must be the result of Mark Cuban went bananas with the NBA office. Antoine Wright's foul(s) was actually very weak considering the last minute of game standard, so a non-call was okay to me. The Mavs couldn't blame the refs if Wright didn't wrap Melo up.

So, I think Stern feels like he owes Cuban one. The Mavs will win tonite's game.

I'd love for the Mavs to win the next 3 games. Game 7, may the best team win.
