I think Yao has said the two things he wants most are to win an NBA championship and to win in the 08 Olympics. I would guess that a gold in the olympics is worth more to him than a championship.

Come on guys, give Yao a break. It's pointless to argue he would like to win it all in an NBA season or in 08 Olympics because you never know what Yao thinks. It's just great to see Yao play some great basketball games, no matter it's in CNT or Rockets uniform.

Wow, he's leading the tournament in scoring, despite Dirk dropping 47 last night, and I doubt he's 100% yet. I'm now sure the end of last season was not a fluke, this is the new Yao and the Yao we're gonna see for years to come. If T-mac stays healthy there's no reason to think we won't be in the hunt this season.

Bottom line is... you're a homer of the Rockets. So your opinion is equally biased, therefore we must go on what Yao says. Based on what he said in his book and movie, there is NOTHING THAT WOULD PLEASE HIM MORE THAN TO MAKE HIS CHINESE FANS HAPPY BY BRINGING HOME THE GOLD. Case closed. You lose.

It's Ok for you to have this dream! Yao Ming would never say publically that he would prefere to win the NBA rather than win for China. [only commons sense]. Considering that China is his homeland and so many chinese fans have great hope in him.
But you are wrong about this picture of Yao Ming, just you wait and see when he wins the NBA Championship!!:p

This is awesome we already saw U.S and Battier vs china and yao, now we're gonna see china and yao vs greece and v-span. i think v-span is averaging 14 points on 50% shooting.

Man, I understand the thrill of having your national team advance, and all of us are excited about Yao's play, and the remarkable fact that he's doing this while still getting back into shape from an injury, but that was just a, with all due respect, stupid post. In my opinion.

    Great win for China!

    Easy, my friend.

While what sammy said about "Yao would rather win a ring than a WBC championship" is not true, zhaozhilong's "to him the ring is next to nothing compared to CNT" is just BS.

Yao wants BOTH and there is no conflict between them. However, a NBA ring is more realistic. BTW, China's hope on 2008 Olympic Game is not the gold - it's a medal.

I totally agree. The task at hand in the World Championships, I think Yao's motivation is to be the player he can no matter what the venue. Does he take great pride in playing for his nation, absolutely, especially considering thier underdog status. But I'm sure he's just as driven to live up to his expectations in the NBA and win a championship here.

Team China stands tall in 78-77 win over Slovenia

    By FRAN BLINEBURY
    Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle

SAPPORO, JAPAN -- This is the time of the game when every play becomes more difficult to make. It was the time of the game that they had faced before and stumbled.

This time Team China stood tall. Then jumped with glee.

Wang Shipeng dribbled the length of the floor with clock running down, pulled up and nailed a 3-point shot from the left wing as time expired to give China a dramatic 78-77 win over Slovenia on Thursday that lifted Yao Ming and his teammates into the elimination round of the World Basketball Championship.

"Man, that's a really clutch shot," said a jubliant Yao. "Just the kind of shot that we see in the NBA. But it is hard for me to imagine it coming from us."

Yao was the horse who pulled the Chinese wagon again with 36 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots as he never left the court in playing the full 40 minutes of a win-or-go-home game. After losing their first three opening round games, China kept its hopes of advancing alive with a win over Senegal and then kept battling even after Slovenia opened up a 14-point first half lead.

Things still looked bleak when Sani Becirovic hit a driving layup to give Slovenia a 74-70 lead with 1:17 left in the game.

China nearly was robbed of a critical possession when the shot clock failed to start as they brought the ball over the midcourt line. The referees finally stopped play and set the shot clock down to just 3 seconds, when there should have been more than 10 left. But Zhu Fangyu grabbed a quick inbounds pass and hit a leaning trey from the right side.

After Becirovic missed one of two free throws, Slovenia was ahead by 75-73. Liu Wei then penetrated from the left side and dished to Yao for a nice bucket that tied the game with 30.7 seconds to play.

Slovenia ran the clock as far it could and got Uros Slokar coming across the lane for a hook shot and a 77-75 lead with 5.8 seconds remaining.

China had no timeouts and only a desperate chance. But Wang made it pay off. This is only the start of the second season as a member of the national team for the 23-year-old.

"When I shot the ball, I did not feel that I shot it well," Wang said through a translator. "I could feel that a defender was near me and I did not know if he would block it."

Wang's heroics were the most drama for Team China since 1990 when Hu Wei Dong -- known as the "Chinese Jordan" -- hit a heave from beyond midcourt for a one-point win over Italy and the bronze medal in the Goodwill Games.

At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, China defeated defending world champion Serbia for the biggest win in national team history.

"I cannot say which win is bigger," said Yao. "This was just so exciting. So dramatic. I just gave someone $500 bucks to go buy souvenirs. I want to remember this."

I have said many times that Yao's teammates are scrubs. But this guy looks quick and can really elevate. what a shot.
