Wo wo wo, What the heck? I am so confused now. Sombody earlier said if PR wins, then PR gets 3rd place, and since China beat Slovenia, China advances, right?

If PR loses, then all 3 teams have 2 wins. Somebody earlier said that, then the ranking is decided by game differential between those three teams, which is already decided and final. Slov gets 3rd and and China 4th.

Then how come the reporter said the spot for China is still not ganranteed? Can somebody confirm that the point differential between those 3 teams decided the ranking, or the point differential of all 5 games played? If the later is true, then CHina is in trouble coz they lost to Italy and USA by big margins.

Somebody confirm the rules of advancing

Anybody have any video of the winning shot? I'm a sucker for buzzer beaters.

That's why I keep ranting on fiba.com's availability since yesterday. The Chinese media firmly believe that CNT has advanced into the next round no matter PR wins or not against Italy. And I cannot find some other link in the internet clarifying this rule.

If anyone listened to the aftergame analysis by the two chinese analysts, you'll know they made some really good points. Some of them are below, and also are my observations.

    1. China was lucky to have won this game. Slovenia has more talented players who plays more cohesively than the Chinese, obviously. The win cannot mask the fact that Chinese has so many weaknesses that they must amend before even thinking about beating a number 1 seed in the next round.

    2. Some of these weaknesses to be improved include: Offensive Rebounding; finding Yao inside; getting the ball past the half court quicker to get a shot off before 24 seconds; having someone else step up at times in the game when Yao is tired; switching up on defense and not allowing the opposing team to penetrate so easily; no cheap fouls

    3. They were first thrilled about the win, then they started analyzing the game and became more realistic. It is my first time watching a sporting match and sports show of any kind in the Chinese language by Chinese commentators, and I'm surprised by their truthfulness and sincerety in exposing the weaknesses. I thought they'd just praise the team for the win to no end.

    4. They interviewed 3-point game winner Wang S.P. and he looked, how should i put it, sheepish. I don't know how old he is, but he seems to be just a kid, who didn't know how to react to what just happened. When asked what his teammate's reactions were, he said dumbfoundedly, "It was ok, they all congratulated me, and it was similar to the 2004 Olympics, although I wasn't there, but I'm sure it was the same situation. The first person that came to me was Yao Ming, and he just lifted me up and I hugged him, and the rest of my teammates surrounded me. I felt so fortunate" (sheepishly timid laugh).

When asked what he was thinking before he made the shot, he replied, "There was 5.8 seconds left on the clock, so I just dribbled it to midcourt, past it, then to the 3 point line and released." When asked how did it feel when he released, he said with a chuckle, "It was straight, but I didn't know the distance. I was unsure about the distance. There was a guy guarding me very close and contested my shot, and I shot over him. I think if he wasn't there, I would have shot it too far!" (laugh)

I have a question, what happened to Yi Jianlian? I was waiting for the 2 analysts to say why he didn't play much at all in the 2nd half. I got tired and closed the window. Was he in foul trouble? Can't handle the competition?

BTW, I believe in the next game Yao will play under 25 minutes. They'll be down by 15-20+ by the third quarter, and I believe he and the Chinese officials know their goal of reaching the elimination round is realized. No need to put so much strain on himself and in their prized player. I don't think they'll have much of a chance against either Greece or Turkey. I'll be happy if Yao talks some good-natured smack with V-Span, blocks one of his shots, gets his 18-7 and sits the entire 2nd half. He deserves the rest. Enjoy Tokyo, challenge some arcade junkies to a game of Street Fighter, and call it a extremely successful tournament for himself and for the CNT.

This is what I understand. The first tiebreaker is head to head competition. Now in case Puerto Rico loses and there is a three way tie then head to head competiton is equal and the next tiebreaker is point differential... but that is only the point differential for the direct competition among the tied teams. So for China that would be point differential for China vs Slovenia and vs Puerto Rico and the same thing for the other teams. So if PR loses and you have a 3 way tie than China advances because they would have a -2 and PR would have a -7 and Slovenia would have a +6. If PR wins than Slovenia is out because China defeated them and china advances. So either scenario China advances and only if PR loses will Slo advance.

Actually who they play against hasn't been determined yet as Turkey and Greece will battle it out for the C group leader later.

After the win, Yao Ming said that 5 points from Wang Zhizhi (a 3-point play + another layup) in the last stretch of the game were crucial, and that he is a player with vast experience that he and his team mates could depend on. And following his analogy of "Finding his first cup of water after being thirsty for 10 days in the desert", he said: "I think I've found the oasis !!"

Wang Zhizhi after listening to Yao Ming's praise, just calmly said: "We need to continue drinking water."

Great comradeship started building between the 2 !!!
