Ehh I don't know about that. That was the case decades ago but no one has an issue with Doncic other than the fact that he is fat and out of shape. Jokic is widely considered the best player in the world even though he cannot defend a telephone pole.
To be fair though, ALL of the NBA pros with podcasts/youtube shows all flat out say "yeah he can't be the face though, it's our ****." So the point is still pretty valid.
Fair, the comment you responded to said "the league" though, which is definitely more the owners, players, ex-players and pundits more than it's the fans.
