more production from the 3-4-5 or it's gonna be a really, really long season. i believe it's that simple.
Biggio hit .300 last April with 10 doubles and an .861 OPS. He hit half of all his extra-base hits for the season in the months of April and May. That follows a career trend of quick starts followed by reduced production as the season wears. I wouldn't be so quick to pronounce his discovery of the fountain of youth. I'm happy with his production to date, but it would be foolish to count on it to last into August/September.
Because for the last season or so, Burke is the more productive hitter. But if you want to make decisions based on April 2007 only, go right ahead. This is awesome. We're screaming for Burke, then we're screaming for Luke, then we're screaming for Pence. Fans need to make up their minds already. First of all, it's not "disrespect". Second of all, as much awe as I have of Biggio's career, what's best for the lineup now? "When you were a little kid" says it well. First of all, I weren't a little kid, but I get your point. But, if you're referring to the prime of Biggio's career as, "when I was a little kid," that should speak well to the fact that he's quite beyond his prime. Note: I'm not saying, "Biggio sucks" or "bench Biggio." I don't agree with those points of view. I'm just wondering if the Astros are better served with his bat in the 6-hole, once he gets his 3,000.
I like to periodically check the MLB milestone tracker. the projections have Biggio reaching 3000 on 6-19 @LA. He'll be overshadowed though, because they also project Bonds passing Aaron on the same day @ Mil.
that would PISS me off to have bonds break that record on the same day. it's highly unlikely that happens, but when biggio gets 3000 he deserves a day of national coverage. fat head can wait.
It's hard to believe Lance Berkman was the last good hitter we developed. He got called up in 1999 We used to have a highly touted top farm system. You have to start wondering about our scouting dept. and our batting coaches in the minor league system. If Burke is the best they could produce over the years, we've got even bigger problems than our record this season. Whatever happened to the Astros with the fearsome lineups that carried us through the regular season in the late 90's with a breeze until Biggio and Bags would choke it up in the playoffs year after year. Damn Maddux and Glavine! For those years, we would just patch together a crappy starting rotation every year around Shane Reynolds. When we had the luxury of a Kile or Hampton breaking out, we would dump them rather than paying so we could at least hit the ball. Maybe we we're just saving the money to lock up Jose Lima! Seriously, we would never win one game with Dave Mlicki on the mound now. I understand we switched the strategy to pitchers being more important than hitters. However, the organization didn't get the memo we don't have the pitching anymore. No more big 3 of Oswalt, Petitte, and Clemens. No more of that hard, harder, and hardest bullpen of Lidge, Dotel, and Wagner we had a few years back allowing our lousy hitters 9 innings to out score the opponents who basically only got to bat for 6 innings. With three doubles in the last two games, Biggio just pasted that hall of fame wanta be Carl Yastrzemski, for sole possession of #7. What a washup!

Projecting out, Biggio has a shot of passing George Brett to become #5 career doubles leader. He also has a shot of passing Ernie Banks to become about #27 career total bases. Amazing. First ballot lock, if there is a god in heaven. This is not mentioning that Biggio has a shot at #30 all time hits, #12-13 in runs, and #1 hit by pitch. Looking at the all time charts here, it is hard to find players not in the HoF when rankings similar to Biggio in hits, runs, doubles, and total bases.

Naturally, every game broadcast that night switched to the Cardinals game, and only the people in the Dome saw Bagwell's slam. Wouldn't that be fitting to miss Biggio's 3000th hit and see Bonds hit #756...
